We will read six books (one a month, starting in May) from women of color who have experienced multiple layers of bodily marginalization, from chronic illness, to disability, to the immigrant/cross-cultural experience, to multiethnicity. We'll meet once a month via Zoom for an hour to discuss. As a reading community we will ask critical social and theological questions, such as: how do these stories challenge our understanding of the “beloved community”? And how can we become better neighbors and friends having read these stories? This will also be a space to share our own, complex stories as they connect to the books we are reading.
Reading Schedule:
Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack by Alia Joy
Becoming All Things: How Small Changes Lead to Lasting Connections Across Cultures by Michelle Ami Reyes
Mixed Blessing: Embracing the Fullness of Your Multiethnic Identity by Chandra Crane
Hurting Yet Whole: Reconciling Body and Spirit in Chronic Pain and Illness by Liuan Huska
Native: Identity, Belonging, and Rediscovering God by Kaitlin Curtice
Too Heavy a Yoke: Black Women and the Burden of Strength by Chanequa Walker Barnes
(We were going to read On Intersectionality: The Essential Writings of Kimberlé Crenshaw, but it is out of stock everywhere, so looks like that one's off the shelf!)
