This week is a busy week! Not only do we have our Good News Weekly lesson it is also Valentine's Day and in just a couple of days (Wednesday, February 17th) it will be Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. So we will break this weeks lesson down into three sections in order to cover everything we need to . So let's get started with our first section our Good News Gospel lesson for this week "Jesus Reaches Out and Heals".
Introduction: In this Sunday's Gospel reading Jesus continues his mission of healing and spreading the word about the Kingdom of God through his actions. In this weeks Gospel, the leper, who has a very bad skin disease, begs Jesus to cure him. He knows that no one but Jesus could do this. He also knew that Jesus could choose whether to do this or not. So let's carefully read on Page 3 of your Gospel Weekly what the man and Jesus had to say to one another.
Summary: So what did the leper say to Jesus? He said "If you want to, you can heal me." What did Jesus answer, and what did he do? Jesus said he wanted to help him, and heal him so that he would be better." Jesus is moved with compassion for the leper. And the leper, whose faith in Jesus brought him to ask for healing, is so moved by the sight of God's love in healing him, that he goes out and tells the Good News wherever he goes. God wants us to be like Jesus and choose to act in ways that help others, including helping those who are ill. There are many ways we can do that. Can you think of any? If you said send a get-well card, visit them or pray for them way to go!! Those would be excellent ways you could show your love and compassion as Jesus did.
Jesus shows that God's love is for all people and that God calls us to do the same; to love all people. A wonderful example of a man who took this message to heart is St. Damien. St. Damien spent his life reaching out and helping people with leprosy, which is a a disease that people were afraid to get near for fear of catching, so they stayed away from lepers. But father Damien was different. Let's turn to page 2 in your Good News and read all about St. Damien. Then complete the questions below.

Fantastic job! Jesus reached out and healed the leper showing him that God's love is for all people. By healing him he reconnected him to his family and community. They were no longer afraid to be near him. We also saw how Father Damien spent most of his life helping people with leprosy and letting them know that God loved them. And we are called to do the same. We are called by God to love and to help others. And Lent is a perfect time of year to make that happen. During Lent, the Church asks us to pray, sacrifice and to help others. Like Father Damien, we to can make a difference. We will talk more about Lent and ways that we can help other people in our next lesson.
