The harmonic minor scale is distinctive: it has a lowered 3rd, a lowered 6th, and a raised 7th degree.This produces an augmented 2nd (3 1⁄2 steps) between the 6th and 7th degrees, and creates a very different sound. (An easier way to spell it is to raise the 7th step of a natural minor scale 1⁄2 step.)
