Program Description:
Providing a knowledge base in the allied health professions and more specifically, the physical rehabilitation professions. The student will learn the roles of rehabilitation team members, professional practice act rules and regulations pertaining to rehabilitation team members, career opportunities, effective communication skills, safety and environment management, medical terminology, and basic patient care. The student will also gain some exposure to daily office management and operations of a healthcare facility or clinic. Upon completion of the course, the student will have an advantage in marketability for entering into a college program pertaining to rehabilitation or in a field related job market.

Introduction to Physical Therapy Course Objectives:
Distinguish the roles of Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Physical Therapy Aides, Rehabilitation Aides, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants, Speech-Language Pathologists and certified Athletic Trainers.
Identify career opportunities for the Rehabilitation Aide, Assistants, and Therapists.
Understand the ethical and legal issues affecting therapists, and more specifically, the Rehabilitation Aide.
Ascertain the importance and components of good communication skills.
Interpret basic medical terminology and abbreviations used in a variety of rehabilitation settings.
Understand and demonstrate the principles of vital signs.
Obtain knowledge required for basic CPR certification, first aid, and injury prevention.
Demonstrate and explain the principles of proper body mechanics.
Delineate appropriate use of assistive devices.
Discuss the principles of asepsis and infection control. OSHA requirements as well as providing a safe environment.
Demonstrate the necessary preparations of a treatment area.
Specify the principles of positioning, draping and transferring of patients.
Develop effective time management skills in a clinical work setting to assist in team workflow.
Explore basic functional anatomy and physiology as it applies to principles of treatment in rehabilitation.
Understand basic principles of thermal and electro-modalities commonly used in rehabilitation settings. Understand guidelines and the importance of documentation in rehabilitation.

RHS 2175 Introduction to Sports Medicine Course Objectives:
Describe the role and responsibilities of the team physician on the sports medicine team.
Describe the role and responsibilities of a certified athletic trainer on the sports medicine team, including their educational requirements, certification, qualifications, and operation of the athletic training room.
Discuss the relationship between the team physician and certified athletic trainer, as well as other members of the sports medicine team (including but not limited to physical therapy, exercise physiology, sport psychology, dietician, orthopedic surgeon, massage therapist, strength and conditioning specialist, coach, and athletic director).
Describe the role and importance of the preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE), and the possible findings that may cause a concern for athletic participation.
Discuss the danger and management of athletes in various environmental conditions (i.e., heat, cold, lightning, elevation, etc.).
Describe the importance of flexibility, strength, and cardiorespiratory endurance for both athletic performance and injury prevention, and discuss the strength and conditioning principles that can be used to improve these variables.
Discuss the materials and techniques commonly used in taping and bracing for the prevention of and structural support of musculoskeletal injuries in athletes.
Demonstrate basic taping application for the ankle, wrist and thumb.
Discuss principles regarding protective equipment in specific sports, including design, construction, and maintenance of protective sports equipment.
Explain the structures (i.e., ligaments, tendons, muscle, and bone) that comprise musculoskeletal soft tissue, and the specific mechanical forces that cause musculoskeletal injuries (i.e., sprains, strains, and fractures) in athletes.
Identify common musculoskeletal injuries to each major body part including: acute, sub-acute, and chronic conditions.
Identify general medical problems that are commonly seen in athletes.
Discuss the inflammation and healing process, and the effects of pain on the body.
Identify and document the commonly accepted techniques and procedures for clinical evaluations of common athletic injuries/illness including: history, inspection, palpation, and special tests using a basic SOAP note.
Discuss the common psychological problems seen in athletes, and how sport psychology can benefit such athletes.
Identify and describe common therapeutic modalities and their proper application in an athletic training setting.
Identify and describe the basic principles of therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation as it relates to managing and facilitating tissue healing and injury rehabilitation.

HLTH 1200 First Aid & CPR Course Objectives:
Explain how EMS system works and Citizen responder’s role in the EMS system, including how and when to call EMS
Recognize the signs and symptoms of breathing emergencies, including choking, and demonstrate how to provide rescue breathing and first aid for choking
Identify the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and describe how to minimize them
Recognize the signs and symptoms of a possible heart attack, and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain.
Recognize the signs of cardiac arrest, and demonstrate how to provide CPR until emergency medical care arrives.
Recognize life-threatening bleeding, and demonstrate how to control it.
Identify the signal of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and demonstrate how to care for them
Recognize the signs and symptoms of shock, and describe how to minimize its effects
Recognize the signs and symptoms of sudden illness, including poisoning, bites and stings, heat and cold emergencies, and describe how to care for them
Describe when and how to move a victim in an emergency situation

REQUIRED FORMS: All online. All electronic signatures will be reviewed; those incomplete will be unable to continue in the class.

Concurrent Enrollment scoring is a permanent grade on both high school and college records. Due to post-secondary school requirements, the coursework is presented as it would be at the college level; the JATC is beholden to follow grading policies of the Salt Lake Community College and Weber State University. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students must pass CPR written test AND skills exam to obtain CPR certification. Students must pass class with a B or better to obtain First Aid certification.

General Requirements: INTERNET and COMPUTER ACCESS for students. This class will have both online assignments and online reading. Access to the internet and computer after hours will be required.

Required immunizations are to be determined by clinical observation sites, but will likely include:
COVID Vaccination + booster
Current year Flu Shot
Current 2 step TB test (takes two weeks to complete) or TB Blood Test results
Copy of childhood immunization records

We reserve the right to require random drug screen(s). Students who fail random drug screens will be unable to complete the program.

REQUIRED FORMS: All online and will need to be completed to continue in the program.

CLINIC OBSERVATION REQUIREMENTS:
Observing at a clinic is an important part of this course. Students will qualify to observe at clinics by meeting all above-stated requirements, plus keeping grades above a C. Transportation to clinics is the responsibility of the individual student. Some clinics are North, East, South, and West of our school. Students who do not qualify for clinic observations will be unable to receive credit for the program.

Clinical Observations:
Clinical Observations are a key component of the Sports Med & Rehab Program. To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
All forms and required site immunizations turned in at least one week prior to beginning observations
Grade in class 75% or higher
Daily class attendance
Pass HIPAA 80% or higher
Pass OSHA 80% or higher

Each student must observe a minimum of 12 hours at a minimum of 2 facilities.
A contract must be signed with the Jordan School District and the observation site if one is not already in place.
Student evaluations for clinical shadowing may be performed by the clinical site supervisor and reviewed by the course instructor.
Clinical site visits may be performed randomly by faculty of the JATC and instructors of the course.
Clinical site activities will include observation of rehabilitation activities involving therapists and actual patients. No direct student/patient treatment is allowed. Students may also receive training in indirect patient care activities or facility operations (i.e. assisting front office tasks, clinic laundry, and treatment “set-up” or “break-down”).
Patient confidentiality is enforced by each clinical site. Federal Law, HIPAA, and JATC require students to maintain confidentiality with all patient information. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the program and possible legal consequences.

Classroom Policies and Procedures:
Students are expected to follow all JATC rules and expectations
ALL Jordan School District policies apply at the JATC (i.e. dress codes, no-smoking, and drug-free policies, etc.). Cell phones must be turned off during class, including text messaging. Professional behavior (i.e. honesty, dependability, integrity, respect for others, etc.) is expected at all times. No use of profanity or vulgarity is permitted.
Students are expected to follow the following class rules: do not interfere with another student’s learning, be prepared and polite, show respect for others and equipment, and clean up after yourself. Additional policies/rules will be discussed in class.
Consequences for appropriate behavior: praise, class rewards, and/or positive email sent to parents and students.
Consequences for inappropriate behavior: warning, private conversation, loss of participation points, conversation with school administrator, loss of access to equipment, call or email sent to parents, and removal from the classroom in extreme circumstances.

Attendance
If you must miss a day of class, check the Canvas calendar for what we did and the assignments given, ideally on the day you are missing. It is better to stay caught-up with work so ongoing classes make sense and it doesn’t take 3 days to catch up for missing one day (for example). It is best not to miss class.

Quest = Quiz + Test
Most of these are given through Canvas, and are to be taken outside of class time. They are open-book and open-note. There is only one attempt allowed, and each quest is timed. Though they are open-note, if you do not study you will not finish in time. If this timed format is too uncomfortable for you, there is the option of taking the quest at school after class time with an ample time limit of 2 hours, though notes/books/electronics will not be allowed.

Quests must be made up within 2 days of a relevant absence.

Late Work Policy:
Late assignments are accepted, however 5% of the grade is deducted for every day the assignment is late. Assignments are not accepted after they are 20 days late. Please communicate with me for special situations such as sickness, IEP needs, required school trips, etc., and I can work with you on a case-by-case basis.

Non-Completion of Program:
If a student does not maintain the standards and requirements of this course, he/she will be given the opportunity to return to her/his home high school, and will not receive a form of credit for this program.
