A Public Commons - Meeting Space Reservation

A Public Commons extends UIS' history of being an institution focused on openness, innovation and adaptability. This project recreates “the pit,” a popular 1970s Sangamon State University (now UIS) classroom known for its lack of desks and chairs. In this neutral space, people can explore effective communication and problem-solving from different viewpoints. The space is open for public use and is designed to be reorganized according to the specific needs of each event.

Requirements

Individuals and groups can use the space to facilitate meetings for productive discussions. The space is available from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the exhibition’s run, August 28 through October 5. If interested in holding a meeting, facilitators must:

  1. Sign up at least 48 hours in advance.
  2. Event facilitators must show up at least 30 minutes in advance of the event to organize the space according to the needs of the event.
  3. Facilitators can bring a flash drive or a laptop with HDMI capabilities to utilize the gallery's TV monitor or projector for presentations.
  4. At the conclusion of the event, facilitators must send documentation of the event to the gallery at iszab2@uis.edu. This can be as simple as some photos taken of the event or video documentation, interviews, notes, or more.
