what should I work on next?
in between finishing "Lighting Out for the Territories" and starting "Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth" (the next section of A Wheel Inside a Wheel), I'm probably going to take a bit of a break from WIAW and work on something else. this is for several reasons, mostly to keep WIAW feeling fresh and exciting to work on. I mean it probably will feel that way anyway b/c we'll be back to yang, whose sections are much easier to write than reinhard's but that's besides the point...

anyway what follows will be some information about other projects i could work on during this break-- vote now on your phones about which one is most interesting to you.

Option 1: Finish the ItSoH Act 1 Rewrite, "New Creatures With New Hearts"
What is it?
In the Shadow of Heaven, affectionately known as ItSoH, is the huge SFF web serial that I wrote before starting WIAW. Have you read it yet? Most people say it's "pretty good, actually." Anyway it's currently undergoing rewrites, because some of it is very clunky and was written before I knew how to write anything.

What's the scale of this project?
Relatively small. I've already written about half of it, and the remaining half would probably be about 75k words in 14 chapters.

What is the motivation for working on it?
The original draft of ItSoH has a lot of problems, and the beginning of the story is especially rough for people to read. I want to have a more accessible and good entry point to the story.

Who is the intended audience of this project?
People who are interested in my original fiction, but who haven't taken the plunge on reading it yet, mostly.

Option 2: Write ItSoH Act 3, "The Eyes That See the Glory"
What is it?
This would be writing the conclusion of the ItSoH story, but pretending that I've made the requisite changes to acts 1 & 2 to make it function (ie pretending that the rewrites exist already).

What's the scale of this project?
Extremely large. I expect it would be about 300k words.

What is the motivation for working on it?
I want to finish ItSoH, and have something to give to all the people who have been following the story. At the same time, though, I don't want to finish the original version because there are so many things that I want to change on a plot level, so this franken-version would be the compromise.

Who is the intended audience of this project?
People who have read ItSoH acts 1 & 2 and who are willing to put up with some changed continuity in exchange for finishing the story.

How interested are you in "The Eyes That See the Glory"
Option 3: Finish the ItSoH prequel, "Every Hateful Instrument"
What is it?
This is a romance novel centered around the relationship between two characters in ItSoH, Aymon and Halen, set approximately 30 years before the beginning of the story. It's an enemies -> lovers type thing.

What's the scale of this project?
Medium. I expect it would take 125k words to finish.

What is the motivation for working on it?
Mostly it's just a cool story that I want to tell tbh. People who have read ItSoH tend to be pretty invested in the Aymon/Halen relationship, even though/because they are evil DILFs.

Who is the intended audience of this project?
I think anybody could read EHI! It would probably be a good introduction to the ItSoH universe, if you are at all interested. Also if you do like ItSoH, you'd probably like EHI.

Option 4: Attenyang for the economy.
What is it?
Pre/early-canon Yang-centric story about his complicated relationships with Lapp/Jessica and Dusty + a general exploration of his feelings towards his place in the alliance, suddenly having Julian to raise, etc.

What's the scale of this project?
Relatively small. I expect it would take somewhere between 50 and 75k words to write.

What is the motivation for working on it?
I haven't written enough canon-compliant Yang fic, and I want to change that. There's a dire lack of attenyang content on ao3. It would be a gift for someone (I love writing gift projects lol)

Who is the intended audience of this project?
Anybody who likes Yang.
How interested are you in Attenyang for the economy?
Option 5: Ale Heinessen / Book of Exodus Pastiche Fic
What is it?
I want to talk about Ale Heinessen as a moses figure + the civil religion of the Alliance. It would be a self-contained fic about his journey out of the labor camp up to the founding of the Alliance.

What's the scale of this project?
Moderate? I expect it would probably be 125k, but I might be wildly off base on that.

What is the motivation for working on it?
it seems like an obvious and interesting idea, one that has been haunting me since i first noticed the moses parallels. i want to have a space to explore some of logh's ideas about history and how a person goes from being a person to a "historical figure" and the responsibility that entails. you know, the same things I'm always writing about :p

Who is the intended audience of this project?
tbch i have no idea.

Option 6: [cringe alert] LOGH/Downton Abbey Crossover fic
What is it?
Set during the events of Overture to a New War/an approximation of the events of seasons 1 & 2 of Downton Abbey, it's a Reinhard/Kircheis, Thomas/Duke of Crowborough fic, in which Magdalena forces Reinhard to ingratiate himself with the nobility. Hijinks ensue.

What's the scale of this project?
Approximately 13 chapters, probably 75k words?

What is the motivation for working on it?
it's a probably very silly uh, "gift" for a friend of mine who loves DA. I think it would be fun to write more about noble society in the decaying empire, honestly there's a lot that DA has in common with LOGH, if you squint. and the things it has in common are themes that i enjoy writing about. idk i think it could be fun.

Who is the intended audience of this project?
probably literally zero people but if you trust me you will go along on this journey with me <3 maybe i will get some people who like DA to watch LOGH. idk lmao.
How interested are you in LOGH/Downton Abbey crossover fic?
Option 7: Take requests instead?
I could take a couple requests for one-shots instead of working on something large. This idea is unformed because it relies on audience participation lol. I like writing one-shots.
How interested are you in me taking requests?
Option 8: [Non-writing project] Finish typesetting all of WIAW/other fics so that I can make printed copies.
This is just a timesink that I can't really justify working on a lot, but it's also probably shorter than any of these other writing projects, so.

Also, if you want your own print-on-demand copy of various volumes of WIAW, this is the option you should vote for, so that I will do all the requisite work to make that happen lol.

[note about print on demand: i wouldn't like be selling this, I'd just upload the typeset files to a google drive folder and give you instructions on how to order the books from lulu/wherever. you'd have to do the ordering yourself, but i think that's the easiest way to go about things if you want a copy haha.]
How interested are you in me typesetting WIAW?
Option 9: Please just go directly to writing "Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth"
It's the next Wheel Inside a Wheel section with Yang! And I Want It Now!
How interested are you in "Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth"
