Community Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training Cohort Application
Touch of Gold is seeking to increase the availability of culturally relevant skilled breastfeeding support in the Omaha, NE area. Peer counselors are individuals who have had the experience of breastfeeding for at least 6 months, receive basic lactation specific training, and have the desire to connect with and support other mothers to meet their nursing goals.
Our organization exists to eliminate the preventable causes of maternal and infant mortality in the black community. We strongly believe the educational and emotional support provided by peers can seriously reduce the pressure, stress, and lack of information that can come with being a parent. Peers are a front line support network trained to recognize the signs of post partum depression and anxiety, assist with basic breastfeeding concerns, and connect families to community resources.
Since we believe representation, cultural competency, and equity are essential to perinatal care, the primary qualifications to be trained as a peer with Touch of Gold are as follows:
* at least 6 months of consecutive breastfeeding experience (nursing or pumping) within the last 3 years
* an ability to connect with historically marginalized populations (preference for mothers who identify as African American/Black)
* current Omaha Metro Area resident (Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Millard, Bennington)
This Training Cohort is a 12 week course. Upon graduation from the training program you will be certified as a Community Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.
