Welcome! This application form will provide information about the 2023-24 Professional Apprenticeship Class, an INTERNSHIP CLASS for 11th and 12th graders that will be scheduled during 6th or 7th hour.
WHAT IS THE PROFESSIONAL APPRENTICESHIP CLASS?
This internship class is an opportunity for mature, outgoing, intellectually curious and responsible students to provide a voluntary public service to the community in a field they are interested in pursuing as a career. In exchange, they are mentored by a professional in their interest area and are exposed to parts of the profession that may otherwise be inaccessible to someone their age. The idea behind this internship class is to introduce students to the professional world, to gain hands-on experience at those workplaces, and to provide our community with motivated, energetic and enthusiastic interns.
Internship choices include LEGAL INTERNSHIPS (at law firms or with judges), GOVERNMENTAL AND POLITICAL INTERNSHIPS (working with government officials or on political campaigns), EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS (working with teachers and administrators), and interning with professionals at BUSINESSES, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS or NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Students are released early from school during their 6th or 7th hour class in order to complete their internships. You are graded on your performance at your internships, your growth as an intern over the year, your mentor's evaluations of your performance and your reflection on your experiences. As transportation is not provided by the district, students/parents need to work out a plan to get to and from the internship each week.
HOW CAN PROFESSIONAL APPRENTICESHIP BENEFIT YOU?
This class gives you a professional internship experience that is usually reserved for college students and college graduates. Through networking at your internship, you will meet people who may want to employ you for a summer position or a job after you graduate college. You will learn professional skills that cannot be taught in a classroom or learned at an hourly job. You will also get an idea if the career you are interested in pursuing is right for you.
WB interns, present and past, have been offered paid internships in the summer, awarded scholarships due to their internship experience, and have forged bonds with prominent leaders in our community. This internship experience is also an amazing addition to your resume and college application. If you are in DECA competing in the 30 page paper, this experience can provide you with an opportunity to engage in an internship with a professional at the business you are researching as well.
