Murphy Lone Star Committee Application
The Murphy Middle School Lone Star Committee led by Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Mullen is in its sixth year of existence.  We select a group of volunteers from 7th and 8th grade to participate on the committee to read the nominated books for the Texas Library Association’s annual award.   From the list of 75-85 books, our committee selects the top 20 choices that they feel should win the award.  Our list is then taken to the State of Texas committee meeting in Austin and used by the official committee when considering the award winners.  This is a perfect way for your voice as a student to be heard on what makes good literature for middle school.

Please check ALL of the following statements that you will agree to follow if selected for the Lone Star Committee.
Parental permission:  Because the award nominations for Lone Star Award include the age ranges of 11-15, it is a possibility that some material in the books may be considered more mature in nature.  While your child will never be forced to read anything that may upset them, they may be exposed to content that they would not find in a PISD middle school classroom.  This is NOT the norm but if something were to be nominated that is more mature in nature, we need to know that you, as a parent are aware it is a possibility.   As the guardian of ____________________________________, I am aware that my son/daughter may be exposed to literature that contains more mature themes and I give my permission for my son/daughter to be a part of the Lone Star Committee. We will talk as a family about what is appropriate and not appropriate for my son/daughter to read.  Type parents name and email address below.
