We are forming Quick Recall teams for 6th - 8th students to compete in the Fall Catholic Schools Academic League season. Matches will be held on Tuesdays for 7 - 8th grades (Sept. 19, 27, Oct. 3, 10, 17, & 24; Tourney Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 7, & 9) & Wednesdays for 6th grade (Sept. 20, 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18, & 25; Tourney Oct. 30, 1 & 6) The post-season tournament concludes in early November as the previously listed dates and does occur 2 times a week, not only on Tuesday or Wednesday as regular-season play does.
Quick Recall is similar to Quiz Bowl or Academic Olympics. It is a fast-paced, fun academic competition. There will be 6 matches and the tournament immediately follows the season. Tournament is single-elimnination and matches CANNOT be rescheduled based on team availability.
The Quick Recall team is sponsored by our school, but it is entirely run by volunteers. Each team needs at least 2 adult volunteers - a coach who can commit to all practices and matches, and a moderator (reads the provided questions at matches & enforces the rules) who can commit to all matches. Often, 2 parents/grandparents/friends/mentors will split the moderating or coaching role to allow flexibility.
New coaches and moderators must attend a training session, scheduled for Sept. 12 from 3:30 - 4:30 at St. Albert for the Archdiocese.
All volunteers must have completed the Archdiocese's Safe Environment Training within the last 5 years or taken a refresher course, as well as have an up-to-date background check on file with the Archdiocese (cost $15). Both requirements can be verified through Jill Greer, jgreer@htparish.org, in the parish office.
Need to Know Notes:
- Practices will be from 2:45 - 4 p.m. after school. These are typically on Monday (7th - 8th) and/or Tuesday (6th), but are up to the coach’s discretion.
- The number of teams formed will depend on how many children sign up and will be contingent on having enough parent/grandparent volunteers.
