About 826LA's Workshops Program
Through our Workshops program, 826LA builds community amongst our students, volunteers, and other stakeholders by exploring new and creative ways to use the written word to help discover themselves and tell their stories, while also honing their writing and critical thinking skills.

826LA @ The Hammer
For over 10 years, 826LA has partnered with the Hammer Museum to bring our unique brand of programming to students in Westwood and its surrounding communities. One Sunday morning a month, 826LA hosts a workshop at the Hammer Museum, inviting our teaching artist partners to lead 2 hour workshops in which students engage with new kinds of writing or with writing in new way, and leave with a written creation they can be proud of.

Expectations
  • This is a paid opportunity. The Hammer Museum provides an honorarium of $250 per workshop.
  • Responsibilities include creating and leading a 2-hour writing workshop for students ages 8-14 years old (see an example workshop lesson plan here).
  • The number of students attending the workshop is dependent on registration, and can be anywhere between 12-25. Our current average is 16.
  • The workshop should culminate in a final writing product that the students take home with them at the end of the workshop.
  • 826LA staff may provide feedback on lesson plans. Any feedback shared is expected to be incorporated into the final version of the lesson plan.
  • Lesson planning prep time is dependent on experience, but should take no more than 4 hours.
  • 826LA will provide up to 8 volunteers to support and work directly with students on the day of the workshop. Their role should be taken into consideration when creating the lesson plan.
  • Please note that this form is only asking for a proposal. If your proposal is accepted, the lesson plan for your workshop will be expected at least a month prior to the workshop date.
  • The Hammer Museum will provide access to general classroom supplies (paper, pencil, markers) as well as a projector and laptop hook-up with A/V support. You will be expected to provide a list of materials needed along with your lesson plan. Any materials requests outside of those listed above are subject to approval by 826LA and/or the Hammer Museum.
Proposals are open to all. QTBIPOC are highly encouraged to apply.
