During Black History/African Heritage Month, Issamba offers a unique educational and hands-on opportunity for school aged children to learn about the rich cultures of Africa through musical demonstration.
Youth Beat African Rhythm sessions involve 45 minutes of interactive instruction in either African percussion or African dance in school.
In collaboration with renowned leading African artists, we will emerge the whole school into African vibes and introduce youth to African rhythms. Students (and staff) will have the option to be introduced either to African traditional or Contemporary dances with ours guest artists, or participating in a hands-on percussion workshop using authentic African drums and Balafons, a West African calabash xylophone, which was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making the Balafon a sought after instrument during ISSAMBA’s workshops. Participants will develop listening skills, creative expression, and group co-operation while also receiving the appropriate cultural, linguistic and geographic information.
*** ISSAMBA ARTISTS WILL BE BASED IN VICTORIA so, if your school is not located in the CRD jurisdiction, the cost of transportation & accommodation should be considered.
Languages used in the program include: French, English and various African languages.
