Reel Voices 2021 Application
Program Description
Since 2005, Pacific Arts Movement has empowered local high school students to learn the art of documentary filmmaking. This 8-week summer class helps students become socially-conscious storytellers, learn video editing, and experience all stages of production. Students choose their own topics ranging from self love, mental health, social issues, cultural identity and more in stories that are both personal and deeply relevant to the broader San Diego community.

Who Can Apply
No experience necessary. Any local high school student that meets the grade level requirements and is interested in producing their own documentary film can apply. We encourage students to consider their Summer schedule (class information below) and that in the case their schedules are not compatible, to consider applying a different year. No absences are allowed during the program.

About the Class
The class runs on Tuesdays and Thursday (June 22 to Aug 12 - dates pending) from 10AM to 12PM on a virtual Zoom call, with additional virtual office hours and potential outdoor meet-ups (depending on COVID Safety this Summer). The workload is approximately 15-20 hours a week, 4-5 hours in class and 5-15 hours outside of class, for 8 weeks. Camera equipment is provided, but students are welcome to use their own. Students are responsible for their own computers/laptops for Zoom calls and video editing. All films will debut at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in November, students are invited to participate in the gala where they are recognized by the public for their project and receive a $500 scholarship.
