RPIRG Board of Directors - Position Description

The RPIRG Board of Directors is composed of 8 U of R students, and is the decision-making body of RPIRG. The Board makes all major decisions regarding the finances, goals, projects and events, staffing, and funding for the organization.

Board members are elected in late winter semester each year, and new terms start on May 1 each year. Board terms are for two years and board members can be elected for a maximum of two terms.

RPIRG Board Members volunteer an average of 4-6 hours per month, comprising:

1) One board meeting per month (approx. 2 hours, required)

2) Committee work (approx. 1-2 hours per month)

3) Helping to run RPIRG events and promote the organization (variable, average of 1 hour every 2 months)

Board Members are expected to attend RPIRG events and promotional opportunities as their class and work schedules allow. Board Members are also ambassadors for the organization and are asked to promote the organization and its events through their networks.

All RPIRG Board Members are involved in committee work. These committees range from Finance, Staff Relations, Communications and more. Board Members will have the opportunity to choose committees which highlight their strengths and challenge them to learn new skills.

Elections:
Every spring, students vote for their Board of Directors in conjunction with other student group elections. All U of R students who have not opted-out will be able to run for a seat on the RPIRG Board of Directors. You do not have to have experience on a board in order to run! All that’s required is a desire to support social and environmental justice work on campus and in the wider community.

Being on the RPIRG Board of Directors has its perks! Networking with other like-minded people on the U of R campus; becoming a change-maker for social and environmental justice; gaining experience in your areas of interest through committee involvement; building your experience as a community leader; and accessing training opportunities and funds to help you gain the skills you need to be an effective global citizen!
