Overview
The Southeast Fisheries Science Center, in collaboration with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, is conducting a management strategy evaluation (MSE) for dolphin on the Atlantic coast of the US. Stakeholder input is not only useful at the beginning of the MSE process to define conceptual management objectives of the fishery, but continued iterative engagement is crucial to the development of a management procedure that, to the extent practical, optimizes these management objectives.
Purpose
We seek to equitably create a small group of stakeholders with a vested interest in dolphin management to participate in the small stakeholder group for the dolphin MSE.
The working group will be small (less than 20 participants), and is intended to be representative vested stakeholders across regions and interest type. Stakeholders may include: for-hire, commercial, or private recreational fishermen, fish workers / crew, dealers, processers, restaurant owners, non-governmental organizations / conservation and environmental groups, tourist industries, or equipment suppliers.
Stakeholders selected to participate in the small group will be expected to: represent their colleagues to the best of their ability, do their best to attend all virtual working group meetings, and invest in learning and understanding the Management Strategy Evaluation process. We anticipate that the small group will meet with analysts via webinar several times over 2024; meetings will last for at least 1 hour, and the cumulative time commitment is expected to exceed 10 hours over the year.
Please Note:
- Information provided in this application is confidential.
- All applicants are subject to a marine fishery violation background check.
- Selected applicants must have access to a working email address in order to receive materials and correspondence from the Science Center and Fishery Management Council.
- Applicants who participated in the first round of dolphin MSE workshops (held in 2022 and 2023) will be given preference as members of the small group. However, the small group will require additional participation beyond those who attended the first round of workshops, so applying is still encouraged to all who are interested.
