Heberlig Palmer Community Garden Guidelines

By applying for a garden plot, you are agreeing to following guidelines:
Our gardens, water and fence belong to the Borough of Carlisle – they are a gift. We
want to make them last as long as we can. Over the years, committed gardeners
helped to create these guidelines, so please take time to read everything to inform yourself.
Tend to your garden. Talk with each other to help build our community. Contact
leaders if you have a question or concern, but be mindful of their time – they are
volunteers. Many thanks to all who help make the neighborhood a better, more
connected place to live.

1. One of the main goals in community gardening is to work together or next to each
other in relative harmony. Please be courteous in all interactions, and work together to
resolve disagreements. In the spirit of cooperation, all gardeners shall treat the garden,
other gardeners, neighbors, and visitors with respect and consideration.

2. Each gardener is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of their garden
plot. Watering, weeding, harvesting and any other garden-related maintenance are all the
responsibility of the gardener. Gardeners may arrange for other gardeners to water their
plots or assist in weeding.

3. Water is available on site free of charge. A hose or watering can may be available
and must remain in the garden for gardeners’ use.   It's very important to turn off water after using faucet.
Pick up the hose and store it on the fence so the mowing crew can mow.

4. Free seeds may be available at The Tool Library, 735 Factory Street (D Street
corner). Their hours are posted online: Monday, Thursday, Friday 4-7:00 and Sat 9-3:00.
By joining, you may borrow their tools. https://carlisletoollibrary.org/

5. Gardeners are required to bring their own tools and buckets. If they do not have
access to tools, you may borrow and return tools left near the corner bin.

6. Children are welcomed to help in the garden but must be accompanied by an
adult and must be supervised at all times.

7. General: Help keep the area neat; gates closed. Pets are not allowed inside.

8. Garden plots should be cared for regularly. It is the gardener's responsibility to
notify the coordinator if he or she has significant interruptions in caring for their plot. If
any plot remains unattended for more than three weeks, that plot is subject to
reassignment.

9. The application of herbicides (weed killers) to the garden plots is prohibited. If
you see an outbreak of pests, talk with others, such as Chris Hornbaker, neighbor.

10. Preference in garden assignments is given first to returning gardeners who
tended to their gardens last year and contributed to building a strong garden
community, as well as attending the planning meeting. When there is no returning
gardener for certain plots, new assignments will be awarded by the time stamp on their
application and if that is not available, then a lottery system. One garden per
household. If a certain # garden has not been planted by May 31, a leader may assign it
to the next person, in line on the Wait List.

11. Weeds must be removed before they reach 4-5 inches tall. Throw weeds into the
corner bin, they are not to be left on the ground which interferes with mowing. The
Garden Committee may assist in weeding plots prior to weeds going to seed to reduce
spread of weeds to more gardens. If you prefer that others not weed your garden,
talk with the leaders and others – and make sure to keep your weeds short.

12. Gardeners may harvest vegetables and flowers from their garden only.

13. By the end of October-November, gardeners are responsible for clearing their plot
of plants and leaving the plot ready for next spring.

14. If gardeners join late, please ask them to read the guidelines so they’re informed about
what each gardener agrees to do.

15. By applying for, and being awarded a garden plot, each gardener agrees to these
guidelines.
