Volunteer for a shift with the maple syrup evaporator!
Volunteer shifts are Sundays, 3 hours each:  9am - noon, or noon - 3pm.
If you are looking to volunteer but can't do a Sunday shift, email Sarah@osamequinfarm.com

Details
  • This is not a hard job, but you will be on your own! Someone will greet you to get you set up, and then you'll be on your own to fulfill the responsibilities detailed below.

  • There's no limit on how many people you can bring with you to your shift - bring a crew and hang out, if you like! This is a fantastic way to get some fresh air and vitamin D in the winter.

  • Dress to stay warm! You are welcome to hang out in the greenhouse where it’s warmer than outdoors, but this is primarily an outdoor activity. We’ll have some tea for you to sip on, and standing around the fire should keep you quite toasty.

  • Safety first! Children are welcome to attend the boil, but a reminder for children and adults - there is FIRE in that evaporator and all parts of the surface will be HOT! Please use your best judgment when planning who you’ll bring to the boil with you.

Responsibilities for boil steward volunteers:
    • Receive sap drop off from community boil participants - dump sap directly into the evaporator if there’s space, or into the holding receptacle if there’s not. Log sap contributions on the provided sheet.

    • Feed provided firewood into the evaporator to maintain an active boil.

    • Periodically skim foam from the surface of the boil.

    • Marvel at the amazing process, use the ladle and mugs provided to taste at different stages of the boil, steam your face, meditate, appreciate, and enjoy yourself!

    • Morning shift - add sap to keep the total liquid volume within a few inches of the top of the pan.

    • Afternoon shift - do not add sap! Let the sap boil down as much as it can during your shift. IF the sap level gets within 1” deep, call the staff member whose number is provided and stop feeding the fire.
