2022/2023 Mentee Application
What is First Exposures?

First Exposures is a free photography mentoring program for Bay Area youth, to empower young people to thrive, express themselves creatively, and become leaders in their communities. Our goal is to provide accessible arts education and mentorship to diverse communities that have been historically impacted by social and economic inequality. Mentees are 11 - 18 years old and have an interest in learning photography with the help of a caring and supportive adult.

First Exposures is an excellent opportunity for you to learn photography, build friendships, and have fun!

Digital Photography or Film Photography— Which to choose?
Digital Photography:
Digital photography uses an electronic sensor to capture images. These digital photographs are stored on a memory card, and their resolution is measured in megapixels. Think: Professional DSLRs, iPhones, or Android Phones.

At FX, you'll use a DSLR camera.
_______

Film Photography:
Traditional film photography captures images by exposing individual frames on a roll of film to light. Film is made of plastic and layered with silver crystals that darken when exposed to light, capturing negatives of images. When a photographer uses up all the exposures on a roll of film, they take it to a darkroom and develop the photos using liquid chemicals.

At FX, you'll be using a 35mm film camera
Applications due September 19th, 2022
There is only space for a limited number of new mentees every year  so complete the application ASAP. The application should take about 30 minutes to complete.
What is a mentor and how can I be a First Exposures mentee?
A mentor is like a friend, guide, and big sibling. The mentors at First Exposures are photographers and educators who volunteer their time to work with young people who want to learn photography.

If you're 11 to 18 years old and want to learn how to make your own photographs with the help of a mentor, join FX as a mentee! You have to be ready to make a commitment to this fun, exciting art program and come to every single class.
