Residential Interest Form: Santa Fe Pollinator Trail Habitat Kit Program 2022
This interest form is for RESIDENTS within Santa Fe city limits or directly adjacent developed urban areas who would like to create pollinator habitat in their own yards or gardens.

If you would like to use habitat kits in a PUBLIC SPACE, such as a schoolyard, library, public garden, or park, please fill out the Public Space Interest Form here: https://forms.gle/XNVZP8aiPDywL47c8

The Xerces Society is offering pollinator habitat kits that contain climate-smart native plants to individuals that commit to install, maintain, and document establishment of these native plants for pollinators in Santa Fe.

The cost of the kit will be covered by Xerces. Participants are responsible for picking up the kits, planting, watering, maintenance, and submitting follow-up information such as photos, plant survival numbers, and pollinator observations.

To register interest in receiving a kit, please complete and submit this form by June 30, 2022. Selected participants will be notified in July to sign a Project Partner Collaborative Agreement and provided details on the habitat kit pick up. The pick up will be located in Santa Fe and will occur in late August or early September.

Two kit types are available for the 2022 Santa Fe Pollinator Trail Habitat Kit program, each with 32 two-inch pots of 8 perennial native plant species and one large tree or shrub in a 1 gallon pot.
One kit of either type will require about a 200 square foot area for the perennial wildflowers with a 1 to 2 foot spacing between plants, plus about a 100 square foot area for the shrub or tree. Both kits will require regular watering for the first year or two and little supplemental watering necessary once established, with the exception of two species in the Low to Medium Water kit, which may continue to require supplemental watering.

1. Low Water Kit. This kit contains 32 two-inch pots (4 per species) of
pale evening primrose
Engelmann daisy
upright prairie coneflower
horsetail milkweed
blackfoot daisy
chocolate flower
desert mule ear
threadleaf groundsel
and one New Mexico olive in a 1 gallon pot. This small tree can grow up to 12 feet wide by 15 feet tall. These plants will require regular watering for the first two years or so after planting, but will not need much water after establishment.

2. Low to Medium Water Kit. This kit contains 32 two-inch pots (4 per species) of
Rocky Mountain penstemon
showy milkweed
white prairie clover
hairy false golden aster
bee balm
cota
MacDougal verbena
blanketflower
and one threeleaf sumac in a 1 gallon pot. This large shrub can grow up to 12 feet wide by 7 feet tall. These plants will require regular watering for the first two years or so after planting, but will not need much water after establishment. However, the bee balm and showy milkweed will need more water, so placement in a cooler, wetter area of your yard is ideal and plan to provide supplemental water in dry months for many years.

Species list for both kit types: https://xerces.org/publications/fact-sheets/species-for-santa-fe-pollinator-trail-plant-kits

Residents may receive 1 kit of either type, or 1 of each kit type if participant is interested and has the space to accommodate 2 kits (this will be dependent on kit availability)

Kit composition is subject to change without notice.
Which type of kit are you interested in? *
Are you able to pick up the habitat kit in Santa Fe in late August / early September and plant the entire kit within 2 weeks of pick up? Location and pick up dates will be shared with selected participants in July. *
Habitat Kit Planting and Care: The next set of questions are about the location where the kit will be planted and how you plan to care for the plants. The questions in this section refer to the area where you would like to plant the habitat kit (yards, flower beds, gardens at your home).
Do you have approximately 300 square feet of yard, garden, or flower beds in full to partial sun available to plant one full habitat kit? *
Describe where and how the kit will be used. *
Describe in detail where and how the kit will be used. For example, kit will replace rock mulch lawn on south facing side of house in full sun or half of kit will be planted in backyard flower beds in full sun and half of kit will be planted in side yard in part shade.
Are you able to water the plantings at least twice a week until the plants are established (1-2 years)? *
Describe your plan for preparing the habitat area for planting.  Could include weeding, adding compost to soil, removing rock mulch, etc. *
Do you have existing native pollinator plants in your garden or yard? *
Protection from Pesticides
Pesticides can have harmful effects on bees and other beneficial insects. Pesticides include, but are not limited to: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, miticides, and organic pesticides.  Sometimes pesticides are co-formulated with fertilizers (example Weed n Feed products). Pesticide exposure to pollinators may occur in the forms of foliar sprays, soil drenches, tree trunk injections, contaminated soil or plants, etc.  Pesticides may be applied by your landscaping firm, arborist, residential pest control companies, property manager or others. For example, pest control companies may spray for ants or apply termiticides underground.  Please consult these parties to understand their pesticide uses near the kit planting area. Past or current pesticide use does not disqualify a kit habitat project. Instead, it helps guide location and management options.
Can you commit to avoiding pesticide use (see definition above) within the habitat kit planting area indefinitely after planting? (If not, please explain) *
Required
If pesticides are likely to be used outside the kit planting area but within 200 ft of the habitat area, please identify the following for each pesticide to the best of your knowledge: type (e.g. herbicide), purpose, product name, timing (month), and method of application).
What plans are in place to eliminate these uses or otherwise reduce possible harm to plants and/or insects from nearby pesticide uses? (see https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/anr-68 for examples)
Outreach, Education, and Community Science
Please consider displaying a sign to inform others about your pollinator habitat and participating in community science by collecting data to help us learn which plants thrive and are exceptional resources for pollinators in Santa Fe. Participation in Xerces community science programs is not a factor in selection of habitat kit participants.
Would you like a Pollinator Habitat and Santa Fe Pollinator Trail sign to display in your yard with your habitat kit planting? Choose one. *
Would you like to share the location of your habitat kit planting on a map featured on the Santa Fe Pollinator Trail webpage? *
To help us better understand the value of these habitat kits to local pollinators, would you be willing to collect the following data or participate in Xerces community science projects? (Check all that apply)
