Community, labor, and political leaders support Amazon Labor Union-KCVG

Mr. Jassy:

As labor, community, and political leaders in our Kentucky-Ohio-Indiana Tri-state region, we are appalled to hear about Amazon’s attempted union-busting at the KCVG air hub, where workers are organizing for basic rights and respect.

We stand in solidarity with the KCVG workers and their union, Amazon Labor Union-KCVG.

The workers formed their union to demand:

  • A starting wage of $30 an hour, so they can pay the rent and live with dignity;

  • 180 hours of paid time off a year, so they can spend time with their children, families, and friends;

  • translation rights for English language learners at KCVG, who every day endure discrimination and harassment from Amazon managers;

  • and union representation for all workers if they are brought into a disciplinary meeting, because their constitutional right to due process shouldn’t end when they clock in to work.

These are commonsense minimum standards that every worker deserves. We support them.

We also are appalled at Amazon’s firing of pro-union activists at KCVG, part of a pattern of the company’s abuse of worker rights nationwide. A December 2023 news report noted that “Amazon continues to face scrutiny over its labor practices, with 240 open or settled unfair labor practice charges in 26 states.” Administrative law judges have found Amazon guilty of violating workers legal rights, and of illegally refusing to bargain with workers in New York. The Cincinnati office of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is currently investigating more than 30 unfair labor practice charges filed against Amazon at KCVG.

Additionally, we are appalled that Amazon has brought in union-busting attorneys at KCVG, and these attorneys have been involved in conducting anti-union group meetings as well as pressuring workers into one-on-one anti-union conversations.

ALU-KCVG is a homegrown union, standing up for the values of those of us who call our tri-state region home. In standing up for themselves, the ALU-KCVG members are standing up for our entire community, and we support them 100 percent. In opposing their union effort, Amazon is going against the values of our community.

We call on Amazon to:

  • Immediately cease all of its anti-union activity

  • Immediately reinstate Griffin Ritze, along with other pro-union workers who have been improperly terminated

  • Agree in writing to respect the results of an election conducted by the NLRB, and to commit to promptly negotiate with ALU-KCVG if a majority of workers vote UNION YES.

Sincerely,
