Van Safety Guidelines
Students who are given a place on the school van need to follow these road safety rules to keep themselves safe:

GETTING ON THE VAN
· Please be prompt getting out from class. The school van needs to leave promptly to ensure that we run on time.
· Wait in the designated place, at the school gate inside the fence on school grounds. Do not go outside of the school.
· Wait until the van has stopped before getting on.
· Get in the van using the door only.
· Put your bag (or anything else you are carrying) under the seat or on your lap.

TRAVELLING IN THE VAN
· Sit down straight away and remain in your seat for the whole journey.
· Put on your seatbelt securely at all times.
· The school provides booster seats for all students under 7 years old. If you would like your child to be in a booster seat and they are over 7 years you may be required to provide your own. Further information on booster seats can be found at: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/safety/vehicle-safety/safety-belts-and-restraints/child-restraints/using-child-restraints-in-new-zealand/
· Put any rubbish in your school bag.
· There is no eating or drinking in the school van.
· Students are to use socially acceptable language when talking to the driver and/or other students, and speak quietly so they do not distract the driver.
· Students do not harass, bully, or abuse other passengers or the driver in any way, whether verbal or physical.
· Students listen to and follow requirements and instructions of the van driver at all times.
· Students are to respect the school van at all times e.g no standing on seats or vandalizing the van in any way.
· Keep your body inside the van at all times. Do not put your head or hands, etc outside of the window.
· Do not throw things out of the van.
· Carry your school bag in front of you when you are getting on and off the van so it doesn’t get caught in the door.
· Don’t leave the van between home and school unless you have permission from the Principal
· Behave in an appropriate and safe way while on the van so as not to put the driver or themselves at risk.

GETTING OFF THE VAN
· Take all your belongings and any rubbish with you.
· Wait until the van has stopped.
· Get off the van using the door carefully without pushing.
· Stand well clear of the van if it is turning or reversing. Do not walk behind the van.
· All pick up and drop offs will be on the same side of the street as your home. No students will be expected to cross the road.
Please note: Where a students behavior is ongoing or a serious problem, the school may decide to withdraw the privilege of a place on the school van. This could be a temporary measure, or in more serious cases, a permanent one.
A child has the same behavioral expectations in the school van as at school.

FURTHER DETAILS
· Please contact the school driver immediately if there is a change to the normal pick up/drop off.
· The school will endeavour to work in with quick changes to the best of our abilities however at times a request may simply not be possible.
