From Church to the Dancehall Masterclass with the Prohibition Dixie Quintet!

The Institute for Jazz Studies at Bellas Artes School of Music is excited to offer an interactive workshop with members of the traditional jazz group - the Prohibition Orchestra of Chicago - mainstage performing artists with 2023 Jazz Up Glen Ellyn.

MASTERCLASS DESCRIPTION:

This workshop will explore the influence of church harmony upon early jazz. Although hymns are staples of traditional jazz, the harmonies as written are seldom explained in the context of instrumental jazz.

Using vintage hymnal arrangements, workshop participants will learn how the voices are assigned, and how the earliest New Orleans musicians turned church music into a revolutionary new idiom by adding syncopation and swing.

All instrumentalists are welcome, and concert-pitch and transposed Bb and Eb parts will be provided.
