Health Education is about taking action towards improving well-being through learning in health-related contexts. Students learn that well-being is a combination of the physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual aspects of people’s lives. They learn to think critically and make meaning of the world around them by exploring health-related contexts with a socio-ecological perspective. Reflecting critically and analysing the attitudes and values held by themselves and others in relation to different health-related contexts. They learn how to bring about sustainable health-enhancing change for individuals, communities, and society.
Our programme in Health Education is based on the New Zealand Curriculum and reflects our Mercy Values to deliver content that engages our students and enables the development of the key competencies. All teaching and learning is aligned with our school's special character and values.
Key areas of learning at Year 9 and 10 include: mental health and emotional wellbeing, sexuality education, effective communication to enhance relationships, drug and alcohol education, influences and consequences of vaping and how to keep safe online.
One period per week is dedicated to Health Education and students are assessed using both formative and summative tasks and ongoing reflection.
This reason for this survey is to inform you - our Carmel Community and whānau - on what we are doing in Health Education to provide a responsive and student centered teaching and learning programme that meets the wellbeing needs of our rangatahi.
