Karnala Bird Count 19-20-21 May 2023


This is not a photography expedition, bird tour, camping or leisure tour. This is a scientific bird count. We expect you will give your sincere efforts towards the count without any personal motto.

Rules and Regulations of ‘Karnala Bird Count’


A. Eligibility Criteria
1. Participant has to be an Indian Citizen.
2. The participant should be able to walk approximately 25 km (in the course of 3 days) in the forest terrain and on moderate climbs.
3. Participant must have a binocular.
4. Age Limit: 18+ to 60.

B. Selection Process
1. Participants will be selected on the basis of the information filled by them in this registration form and we expect the details provided by participants are true.
2. Selected participants will be intimated by email. Only selected participants have to pay registration charges of INR 1000 to confirm their participation. (No payment should be done while submitting this google form)
3. There will be an orientation session on Day 1. Anyone failing to attend the orientation session will be disqualified from the event and no refund will be given.

C. Miscellaneous
1. Selected participants must report at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary on 19th May 2023 at 1:00 PM sharp.
2.The participants will be given a briefing and orientation after reporting.
3.Basic accommodation will be provided. (Dormitory/Village home stays/Forest Dept. quarters etc.). Selected participants should carry their own bedding/sleeping bag.
4. Toilets might be common/ attached/ mostly Indian/ rarely Western.
5. The electricity at the stay location is intermittent. Participants should carry power banks, torches with extra batteries etc.
6. Simple vegetarian food will be provided for meals.
7. Participants MUST carry insect repellent.
8. Participants can carry their cameras. It is recommended to carry extra batteries for cameras and portable chargers for phones as the place of stay may not have electricity.
9. For confirmation of confusing/rare/doubtful species, participants can be asked for proofs like calls recorded on the field and/or photos.
10. Neither Forest Department and Green Works Trust staff/volunteers nor sponsors and/or organizers can be held responsible in case of any accidents that occurred during the entire course of the Karnala Bird Count event.
11. Consumption of liquor or smoking is strictly prohibited during the event. Violation of any law related to wildlife and protected area will lead to the further criminal prosecution of the participants by the Forest Department.
12. Participants are requested not to litter even if it is biodegradable. Please refrain from using single use plastic.
13. Participants will get a certificate of participation duly signed by the Maharashtra Forest Department and Green Works Trust.
14. Participants are requested to wear hat/cap, full sleeve camouflaged/dull colored clothes, proper footwear, carry a good quality torch with extra batteries, and mosquito repellent. Be ready for sudden climate change,  Carry your own water bottle. 
15. Use of playbacks is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
16. Birds seen during the event should be marked in the provided printed hard copy of the bird list of Karnala. The list will be checked by the judges and only after their approval; you can submit it to the organizers.
17. The GWT team will really appreciate if you share good photographs of recorded species that are taken during the count with us. We may use the provided photos for conservation and awareness purpose with due credits.
18. Organizers have every right to expel any participant if found breaking any rule/ foul behavior.
19. Organizers have all the rights to cancel the registration if submitted information is found false.
20. Organizers have all the rights to reschedule the event in case of any emergency.

D. About Travelling
  1. Local travel within Karnala (till homestay OR to reach the trail destination) will be done by participant vehicles. So, participants carrying their own vehicles are advised to fill the fuel tank adequately before reaching Karnala.
2. If you are planning to drive to Karnala Bird Sanctuary in your own vehicle then please select option accurately
3.  Forest roads are narrow and have thorny bushes alongside the road. So, participants need to be prepared for some off-roading experience in their car. (Our volunteers have already tried Hyundai i20 on those roads.)
4. Please do not change your plan about bringing the vehicle at last moment. Notify us at least one week in advance if any change in plans.
