If this form has found you, I don't think I need to explain all the ways classical music education (especially in voice) can be harmful to developing musicians, between old fashioned rules, unhealthy competition, and the general elitism and privilege that exists in the world of classical music. Since graduating, I have had plenty of experiences that have made me feel isolated and "not good enough" as both a singer and a composer. Last year, I had an experience as a composer that was so painful that I had months of writers block, and I wasn't able to start writing again until a friend shared with me that they had a similarly painful experience, and assured me that I wasn't alone in this. After this, I was able to start writing again and I wrote this new piece, entitled "I had writer's block" (I am 100% taking suggestions for a new title.)

As a composer, I have received a good amount of pushback for giving my performers a ton of freedom in their performance practice. This piece is centered around the idea of choice and giving performers decision making capability as well as a sense of individuality, even in a big group. 

"I had writer's block" (again, someone please help me come up with a better title) is a guided improv for any number of vocalists allowed to sing in any octave and timbre that feels good and natural to them. If you are interested in coming to a rehearsal and recording session, and giving me compositional feedback, I would love to have you come sing with me. 

Note: This is an unpaid project but I will do everything in my power to at least provide snacks, a safe space for singing, and hopefully a good time.
