The Women and Girls in Science 2024 (WGS24) challenge, organised by the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO), is an event for female university students and early career researchers up to the age of 35. The aim of the WGS24 Challenge is to inspire young women to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to increase diversity in these disciplines.

Join the participants in the grand finale of the WGS24 challenge! The event will take place on Thursday 30 May 2024 between 13:00 and 18:00 CET at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. You will be able to engage with the finalists during their presentations in the Q&A sessions. Then, the winners will be selected by a panel of experts from the STO network!

For your information - a short version of the agenda is below:

  • Welcome address and context of the WGS24 challenge by NATO Chief Scientist, Dr Bryan Wells.
  • High-level discussion on the importance of inclusion of Women and Girls in STEM - between UN Women Brussels Director – Ms. Florence Raes; Defence Advisor to the US Mission to NATO – Ms. Rachel Ellehuus; Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security – Ms. Irene Fellin.
  • Scientific Competition – Presentations of the shortlisted research proposals
  • The importance of gender perspective in technology – Ms. Karen de Sousa Pesse; 
  • Winning stories to inspire future generations – Ms. Christelle Collet
  • Awards Ceremony by NATO Chief Scientist and Senior Advisor to NATO Chief Scientist, Dr Fiona Butcher.
