2024-2025 ZWC Officer Application

WHO ARE WE? We are Zero Waste Committee! All University of California campuses had a goal of being zero waste by 2020, and while that deadline has passed, we still exist to try to reduce waste generated on campus at UC Santa Barbara.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE? In the past, we have worked on projects and put on events. We have worked with Patagonia and Post Landfill Action Network to put on the annual Zero Waste Festival, quarterly Fix-It-Fair, shoe drives, created a Reusable Menstrual Products Program, conducted a pilot compost program in the Santa Rosa Residence Hall, held educational documentary screenings, and more!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Each position has different opportunities, but none require any experience! Below are brief descriptions of each position, but you can find full descriptions in our Legal Code: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X9_OxOP0EMOAmwpgN7xpABOMVMnSoorNss7Fg3VqT1c/edit?usp=sharing.

The Co-Chairs (2) will oversee the Committee's projects, lead meetings, and attend important AS meetings to represent Zero Waste Committee. They will be the liaisons between the committee and our senators, AS faculty, and other organizations.

The Administrative Coordinator will attend every meeting and take minutes to send out, send out a weekly newsletter, document the activities of Zero Waste Committee for the year, organize documents and archives of Zero Waste Committee, and handle all room reservations.

The Treasurer will handle all financial responsibilities of the committee, including planning the budget for the next year, managing the current budget, and managing our Compostable-ware program.

The Public Outreach Coordinators (2) will build partnerships and collaborations for Zero Waste Committee, focusing on tabling with other organizations. This person handles all of our social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook).

The Activities Coordinators (2) will put on events to build community and encourage a zero waste lifestyle. These include study jams, workshops, and retreats.

The Compost Coordinators (2) will expand composting infrastructure in the residence halls, handle grant opportunities to improve compost infrastructure and programs on campus, and work with Public Outreach Coordinator to encourage composting on campus.

The Zero Waste Festival Coordinators (2) will put on an engagement and educational event in Winter/Spring 2019 similar to our past festivals: highlighting the people, companies, and movements that are challenging the Linear Consumption Economy, and intervening at points along a wasteful and unjust system to build a better model, such as promoting reuse and recycling of all materials.

The Zero Waste Athletics Coordinators (2) will work within and outside of the committee to implement solutions for reducing the waste created by athletic events and programs. They will collaborate with UCSB's Athletics Department and attend the Student-Athlete Advisory Board meetings. They are ideally student athletes.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? Ideal candidate should demonstrate willingness to learn, punctuality, initiative to take on new projects, creativity, attention to detail and availability to dedicate time to their position. We value people who can help increase the diversity of perspectives that we bring into the work that we do. Please note, officers must be available for the entire school year (i.e., we cannot accept applicants who will be studying abroad). Officers must also be able to attend our meetings on Mondays at 5pm (unless you have a valid excuse).
