Washington Bus Education Fund 2021 Fellowship Application
Final application deadline: Wednesday, March 31st, 2021 at 11:59pm
Program start date: Tuesday, June 15th, 2021

The Bus Fellowship is a ten-week paid political, social justice and community-building program for young people. The Fellowship is part time, and is open to 18-25 year olds. Fellows spend the summer grassroots organizing, building community (likely through online events), and learning about social justice and politics in Washington state. Alumni leave the program with the ability to champion issues they are passionate about, and the skills to make real change in their communities.

Fellows learn from and with each other and are expected to be committed to the fellowship as their first priority. Fellows are paid at a rate of $16.69 per hour and can expect to spend about 20 hours per week learning and doing campaign work, including some weekends and evenings. This program will be mostly remote through Zoom video calls due to COVID-19, with the potential for some in-person work at the discretion of the Fellows and the Washington Bus staff.

If you are interested in the fellowship, but are not yet 18, please reach out to us or fill out our volunteer interest form: https://forms.gle/B3kGggUC74auhDs88.

We prioritize young people who are under represented in politics and advocacy work in our programming, meaning we highly encourage young people of color, young queer people, young working class people, and other folks with marginalized identities or barriers to access in politics to apply to our programming. We ask for your previous work and internship experience to help us get a picture of who you are. We are really looking for young people passionate about learning more about civic engagement and social justice in WA. Nice to meet ya!

Fellowship Responsibilities:
-Strategize and carry out field campaign activities with Bus Staff, such as organizing college students, phone-banking, and other activities to build support around a campaign.
-Participate in workshops and guest lectures. Topics include: social justice, lobbying, grassroots organizing, and more.
-Create plans for volunteer recruitment, retention, and training.
-Coordinate voter registration and education efforts with the intent to increase young voter turnout.

Fellowship Qualifications:
-Ages 18 to 25
-Interest and passion for social justice learning and activism in a team setting
-Able to meet deadlines, come to work on time, and reliably show up to meetings
-Have a positive attitude and willingness to proactively communicate and collaborate with other interns and staff
-High level of follow through on your work

Fellowship Logistics
Fellowship runs from mid June to mid August. The approximate weekly schedule is Tuesday-Friday from 10am-3pm, with occasional evening and weekend commitments, which we will do our best to schedule ahead of time.  Fellowship needs to be your priority during the summer in order to allow you to integrate the skills and connections you are building. That being said, we recognize that many Fellows will need to take on other work to support themselves, and offer a scholarship program to try and offset other commitments.
The Fellowship is a 20-hour a week time commitment, and runs from June 15th through August 20th. Do you have any obligations that will conflict with your full participation in the Fellowship? *
