Monday, August 15th from 2-6 pmJoin us for a school garden volunteer workday at Kohala Elementary to get ready for the 2022-2023 school year!
Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Please bring water, a water bottle, sun protection and a mess kit for food. We will provide food, tools and supplies.
Here's a note from Garden Leader Heather Brovsky:
"We are grateful for your kokua as we begin a new school year at Mālama Pono, the Kohala Elementary School Discovery Garden. Please bring your own gardening gloves & favorite tools if you have them, hat & sun protection, water & water bottle, and we would like to have a zero-waste event so if possible bring a bowl and utensils to share farm fresh food at the end of our workday.
Workday activities will include planting trees donated by the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, building a bamboo teepee to offer shade and serve as a trellis for growing pumpkins and beans, as well as planting native plants and seeds along the newly cleared hillside below the school, and generally cleaning and and loving up our two acre farm and outdoor classroom. There will be keiki-friendly projects for families to do together as well."
The special guest presenter will be Sam Fleshman of Natural Progression, who will share a few styles of building trellises for different types of foods like squash, beans, tomatoes, and more! Learn the benefits of trellises in the garden and how growing food vertically helps increase useable space within the garden. Trellises can add a beautiful and fun element in the garden, great for team building and empowering creativity.
We look forward to taking care of the garden with you! Please fill out this form to help us plan for the day.
