Signature Honors Internship Program (SHIP): Internship Request Form - Academic Years 2023–2024 and 2024–2025

Through the Signature Honors Internship Program (SHIP), the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) collaborates with faculty, staff, and off-campus employers to provide enriching hands-on work experience to help students prepare for the future. This program provides a variety of options for funding (such as TheDream.US for undocumented immigrant youth who came to the U.S. at a young age), as well as for experience and academic credit to meet the needs of the student and the College. All funds are approved on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Hiring multiple interns for the same position? Fill out the form 1 time.
  • Hiring for different positions? Fill out the form once for each position.

Once the CCPD staff confirms your approval, you must post your opportunities to Handshake, then interview and select candidates.

If you have any questions about this program, please contact the Center for Career & Professional Development at internships@smcm.edu.

INTERNSHIP INFORMATION: Key Program Details
  • The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) staff will accept internship requests and will prioritize internship positions as equitably as possible.
  • A student may only be hired into ONE funded SHIP Internship position at a time. In other words, they CANNOT be hired by two supervisors concurrently. If you have a student in mind, please list their name below so the CCPD staff can confirm that they are not already pursuing a funded internship.
  • Students are not allowed to start an internship until they have completed all of their payroll paperwork. THIS IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT AND CANNOT BE WAIVED.
  • We ask students to create an artifact (video presentation, slide deck, descriptive report, etc.) about their internship to add to their portfolio on LinkedIn and share it with CCPD.
  • Continuing internships across semesters: To ensure that each internship remains a valuable experience related to the student's coursework and/or professional goals and not simply a job, continued approval and authorization for internship funds is contingent on your ability to demonstrate that there are clear learning objectives which were not fulfilled during the first semester of the internship.
  • Deadline to hire: The Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) strives to provide internship opportunities to as many students and on-campus employers as possible. After the CCPD approves an internship opportunity, the employer has four weeks to hire an intern. If the employer cannot hire an intern after four weeks, CCPD will reallocate the funding for that internship to another opportunity.
  • It is the responsibility of the intern's immediate supervisor and the intern to ensure they do not exceed approved hours & funds without prior written approval by CCPD. Compensation will be limited to the total amount approved in the Internship Agreement.
  • Do not officially offer an internship position or have a student begin work until the CCPD team can confirm that funds are available and the student has no conflicting SHIP position scheduled, and an Internship Agreement is fully executed by all interested parties. If YOU choose to employ the students before funding is approved, YOUR ORGANIZATION must pay them from your funds.
INTERNSHIP GUIDELINES
To qualify as a legitimate internship, each position must meet the following requirements as defined by the National Associate of Colleges and Employers (NACE):
  • A learning experience with a real-world opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or replace the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • Learned skills and knowledge that are transferable to other employment settings.
  • A defined beginning and end that is mutually agreed upon and consistent with institutional sponsor guidelines and schedules.
  • A position description with clear responsibilities and required/desired qualifications.
  • Clearly defined learning objectives/goals supportive of the student’s academic program goals and institutional requirements.
  • Direct supervision by a professional(s) with relevant expertise and educational and/or professional experience who provides productive feedback, guidance, and the resources and equipment necessary to successfully complete the assignment.
If you follow these criteria, it is the opinion of NACE and St. Mary's College of Maryland that the experience can be considered a legitimate internship.
