Part B. Solution Questions
Though you may have been able to repair the damage due to flooding, solutions that will help prevent this damage in the future may involve much more dedicated work. These are called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Possible BPMs may include:
WATER RETENTION PONDS - ponds higher in elevation that detain water
DITCH STABILIZATION - adding rocks, grass, turnouts to ditches to slow water velocity and stabilize
soil/ditch
STREAM STABILIZATION - bank work, adding rocks, drop downs, to slow water velocity and stabilize
soil/stream
EXPANDING AND IMPROVING STREAM RIPARIAN ZONES - areas on either side of a water way,
reconnecting stream to the flood plain that contain and dissipate flood waters
CORRECTLY SIZING CULVERTS - many culverts are oversized, allowing too much water through or
undersized, which can cause blockages
BUILDING RAIN GARDENS AND PERMEABLE DRIVEWAYS - choosing materials that allow water
to infiltrate rather than runoff
The questions below will address your experience with these practices.
