As African Finance Ministers meet in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (March 4-5), Africa is at a crossroads, grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and facing economic and environmental challenges. The region experiences a sluggish recovery, hindered by a slow global economy, persistent inflation, elevated borrowing costs, and a cost-of-living crisis. Climate shocks, such as droughts and floods, have further exacerbated the situation, undermining agricultural productivity and food security. In many countries, inflation remains high, exchange rate pressures persist, and political instability adds to the uncertainty. The disillusionment among the populace is palpable, as hopes for a swift economic rebound have been dampened by these persistent challenges.
In the lead up to the 2025 Jubilee Year, Africa religious leaders and faith-based organizations are calling on regional and global leaders to deliver sustainable recovery policies, demanding a focus on stabilisation of economies and prioritising reforms that address both immediate needs and long-term development goals.
Speakers at this webinar will explore the following questions:
What is the human and planetary impact of current economic challenges facing Africa, including rising inflation, increasing debt burdens, and the impact of climate shocks on the continent's recovery and growth prospects? How do joblessness, governance and citizen disillusionment with their governments contribute to the current crises? What is the role of multilateralism and international solidarity in supporting Africa, especially in the context of global financial architecture and climate change? What solutions and strategies should be in place to finance sustainable development, focusing on economic justice, debt restructuring, and resilience to climate shocks as Africa approaches the Jubilee Year?
