Folk School Workshops:
1pm
Intro to Bluegrass Guitar - Jennifer Trowbridge and Patrick Cleary
What is bluegrass? What instruments make up a bluegrass band, and what is the role of the guitar?
How bluegrass songs are usually structured. What are the chords and why is a capo useful?
Basic Strum Patterns and Techniques– Boom chuck
Study piece: Will the Circle Be Unbroken

1pm Violin/Fiddle/String - Rob Diggins
East Indian Raga’s and Rhythm’s – Level: Intermediate Beginner and Beyond!
Rob will teach the basic raga common to both the North and South Indian Music Traditions using
some of the traditional methods and time cycles adapted to the traditional Western European
violin tuning.

1-3pm
Clawhammer Banjo – Kurt Hippen
Discuss left and right hand clawhammer banjo techniques, demonstrations, explore tunings, work on a
tune. A two hour workshop.

2pm
Violin/Fiddle/String - Rob Diggins
Introduction and Practicum with Jazz Harmonies and Rhythms – Level: Intermediate Beginner
Beyond!
Rob will encourage group jams on the basics of Major, Minor and Dominant Harmonies in all
twelve keys, possibly some jazz blues, some modal stuff, and who knows what else will come
up!

2pm
Bluegrass Guitar - Learn the G run and other essential techniques - Jennifer Trowbridge and Patrick
Cleary
Bluegrass guitar has some essential techniques that help to give it its unique sound. Most important is
the “G run”, which acts as a punctuation mark in a bluegrass song.
In this class, students will learn the famous G run and variations, as well as other short walking lines.
Also Hammer-ons and Pull-offs will be covered.
Study piece: Rolling in My Sweet Baby’s Arms

3pm
Harmony Workshop
Come join Singers Jim Hubbard, Seabury Gould and Teri Smolens for an hour of harmony exploration. In the hour we will learn a few songs; In My Life and Helplessly Hoping as a group the first hour, and California Dreaming the second hour.  We will practice a few tricks to hit the appropriate notes. Some vocal warm ups exercises and lots of fun.

3pm
Songwriting Workshop – Xeff Scolari
Xeff Scolari has been writing, recording, performing, and producing music in Humboldt County for over three decades, currently fronting the band Red Hot Shame.The session will cover the process Xeff used to write a trilogy all based around a common theme, how it came together, thought process, rhythmic/rhyming schemes within, and then open it up to conversation.  The session will end with a songwriting assignment.

Beginning Flatpicking Leads
We’ll start with a very simple version and offer some ways to embellish and explore

Introduction to Bluegrass Mandolin – Rob Fowler
An introduction to bluegrass mandolin and basic techniques such as chop chords and tremolo.

Percussion - Knick Moore
Americana Back Beat
Understanding the back beat and it’s use in Americana and folk music. An introduction to rhythm and tempo utilizing various percussion instruments.
