Developing Multicultural Competencies
TRAINING GOAL:
Developing multicultural competency has become important for all professionals in the mental field, as society becomes more racially diverse. This presentation will cover three areas. First, the components of multicultural competence will be presented and discussed. Second, the multicultural tool of racial identity will be used to increase self-awareness and awareness of the culturally different client. Finally, a model of organizational development toward multiculturalism will be presented to enhance the development of multicultural competence of members of an organization.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this training, participants will learn:
Participants will increase their understanding of the components of multicultural competencies
Participants will be able to apply racial identity models to working with diverse clients
Participants will be able to identify stages of development toward multiculturalism for organizations
WHO: Dr. John E. Queener, Jr - Dr. John E. Queener, Jr. obtained his BA from The College of Wooster, MA from The Ohio State University, and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Akron. He is a professor and teaches graduate courses in the Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Akron. He writes and publishes research in the areas of multicultural issues, culturally specific interventions, and retention and African American males. He also currently serves as the Executive Director for Minority Behavioral Health Group, a non-profit organization founded to reduce the mental health disparities for African Americans and other under-served populations.
