The Inception Orchestra Young Composers Mentoring Program is a comprehensive music composition program catering to all levels, Ages 8-18.  Our curriculum is designed to bring students face-to-face with over 30 industry professionals and to teach the collaborative nature of the composition process. We teach concepts from creativity and music theory, to orchestration and arranging, all the way through to music prep, recording and performance. Students will work with multiple mentors from our staff as well as guest mentors in the Inception program.
Students are required to attend weekly Saturday group sessions (3 hours) and private lessons (1 hr) at least every other week. Weekly private sessions are available to those students who have progressed in their composition homework. Students must attend Saturday sessions to qualify for private mentoring. (Missing more than five [including on-line] dates can be ground for removal from the program) Dates and times subject to change. Pre-arranged absences for music performances will not count against the missing dates.
Students who will miss Saturday sessions must inform leadership in advance of absence.
Students who must miss a Saturday session will review the video of the session (usually available by Monday) and pass a quiz on the session.
Students will complete class assignments and be ready for each group and private session. Private mentors reserve the right to end sessions early if homework has not been completed.
Online mentoring will be scheduled between my mentor and myself, but if I miss a scheduled mentoring session, it will count as an absence and will not be rescheduled unless the mentor agrees to make it up.
Students and/or parents have 24 hours from the scheduling notification to respond (doodle poll or email confirmation) or the lesson will be cancelled for the week.
Student must cancel private mentoring sessions at least 24 hours in advance or incur a $100 fee. The only exceptions are illness and schoolwork. It is at the mentor's discretion to reschedule this.
I understand that if a mentor has to reschedule an online session, he/she will make up the session with me at a mutually convenient time.
COST OF PROGRAM. Inception will charge $200/student per month for its programming. Tuition is due at the 1st of each month. Tuition is charged on a sliding scale (with financial assistance or scholarship).
Those students/parents requesting financial assistance/scholarships will be asked to donate service hours to Inception to help with operations.
All composition students will be asked to give back to the organization via peer mentoring, marketing, podcasting or by being ambassadors for the program.
Students will be performing alongside classmates and mentors live in concert and in class. Participation is mandatory both on original compositions and also fellow classmates’ pieces if written for.
The Los Angeles Inception Orchestra will film and/or record any or all of  the mentoring sessions and they have the right to use my likeness and recordings in stills, video or audio recordings for any and all purposes,
The breakout rooms are usually not recorded. Where possible two (2) adults are in the room. Background checks have been run on the staff mentors.
By contract between the LA Inception Orchestra and American Federation of Music, usage of music can only be within the Inception App. The LA Inception Orchestra will make all works available for composers to demo via the app without restriction.
Families are responsible for all transportation to and from all Inception workshops and events.
Composition work will be done in Sibelius. Students must have access to a computer and the internet. Financial assistance is available if necessary.
