Russell County Public Schools will be offering a Virtual Academy for one year as per guidelines set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia. We will be partnering with a third-party vendor, Edgenuity, to offer this learning format. Edgenuity will utilize teachers, licensed by Virginia, to provide instruction; however, these teachers will not be employees of Russell County Schools. Students accepted into the academy will be enrolled in Russell County Schools and will have a contact person in the division who will coordinate the instruction with Edgenuity. Courses are designed to meet daily on a required attendance schedule. This program is designed to bridge the gap between pandemic and post-pandemic instruction for those who are anxious about face-to-face instruction.

Admission Requirements

Students must have access to reliable internet.
Kindergarten applicants must be five years of age by September 30.
Students must meet all Commonwealth of Virginia school enrollment requirements.
Students must be on track and in the grade appropriate for age (no retentions).
Students must have shown adequate progress on the previously taken grade level assessment.
High school students must have at least a “C” average in the previous year.
Elementary and middle school students must have at least a “C" average in reading and math.
Students must have passed all SOL tests administered the previous school year.

Attendance

The Code of Virginia for school attendance applies to virtual schooling-- compulsory school attendance is required by law.

Expectations

Students must complete all online assignments as required by their instructor for each class within the due dates
Participate in required synchronous learning opportunities made available by your instructor
Students/parents must maintain regular contact with teachers and RCPS staff through established channels of communication
Upon missing five unexcused days of instruction, dismissal from the Virtual Academy may occur and the student returned to in-person learning
Students who do not make adequate academic progress may be dismissed from the Virtual Academy and returned to in-person learning
The parent must serve as the Learning Coach and see that the student is working toward educational goals

Notes

Eligibility for students with an IEP or 504 Plan will be determined by their success in meeting the IEP/504 goals. IEP related services, such as PT, OT, and Speech will not be available through the RCPS Virtual Academy.
The school division may alter defined expectations as deemed appropriate to meet specific needs or as otherwise approved by the superintendent.
The school division reserves the right to revoke enrollment in the Virtual Academy if a student is not meeting expectations.
