How to Teach Bone-Informed Yoga

We all have a skeleton!

Bone health is important at every age but especially during childhood and adolescence when bones are still growing.

As most people reach their maximum bone size and strength (known as peak bone mass) by age 30, bone-healthy behaviors are important from an early age in order to optimize bone health and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life.

Millions of people all over the world have low bone density or osteoporosis. Numbers like 2.3 million Canadians and 54 million Americans have been reported.

Fractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined but it's not talked about because it is relegated to an elder population, which is so often ignored in our culture.

Now we consider it commonplace that 1 in 2 women and up to 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.

This does not have to happen if we start earlier with bone health awareness and help those who already have low bone density reduce their fracture risk.

We, as yoga teachers, can help to turn the tide.

Yoga has become increasingly popular in recent years, with over 36 million people practicing it in the U.S. alone. According to the International Yoga Federation, about 300 million people practice globally!

Yoga is uniquely beneficial to bone health!

We can use yoga to safely and effectively support, nourish, and strengthen our bones as we age - starting at any age.

This training will break down some myths and call attention to how yoga can support the health of our skeleton early on before an osteoporosis diagnosis and how to safely support students who already have low bone density.

If you teach seniors, this training is for you.

If you don't teach seniors, this training is for you.

This training is for you if you teach anyone with a skeleton - seriously.

Here is what a few students have said about their experience with my teacher training:

"Your one size does not fit all approach is empowering but your attention to detail and safety is the key."

"I really feel like I expanded my knowledge."

"Just wanted to say thank you for being our teacher. I appreciate being able to listen to your experience, and really appreciate the energy that you bring in creating an environment where we can feel open discussing and grappling with these age-old and infinitely complex concepts. I'm grateful to be part of it!"

"What gifts you're offering and it's also so inspiring!  Thank you for being such a resource and visionary."

"I have appreciated your guidance deeply. You have a gentle and attentive presence that made me feel accepted and supported. The safe environment you held allowed me to be fully present and share myself without fear. I feel very lucky to have been able to study under you. The qualities you possess as a guide are what I aspire to:-) "

"Mary Beth’s quiet embodiment as a basis for her teaching made it squarely land and stick. I learned some key things at a doable pace that I have incorporated into daily practice and teaching."

"The most valuable aspect of this workshop was the “tone” that Mary Beth set & used. Very nurturing and emphasis on improving practice from where each student is."
