Hey there incoming frosh and transfer students! Thank you for your interest in the Bioinformatics and Coding early start course! Our goal with this pre-fall-quarter learning experience is to give you some foundational skills that will boost your confidence and empower you to consider a major in bioinformatics, bioengineering, computer science, or computational biology. This course will be entirely online.
Instruction is synchronous and you must commit to attend all sessions.
Dates of course: August 22 - September 16, 2022
Class meetings: M,W,F 4:00-7:00PM PDT
This course will help you:
- Learn the fundamentals of programming in R and Bash and expose you to the basics on how to construct
pipelines in a Linux environment
- Understand best practices for naming files and staying organized on a Unix-based server
- Gain knowledge about common biological data formats and protocols and why they are significant in research
- Work with real-world data and be exposed to R Studio and R Markdown language, to keep reproducible records of your scientific findings
- Visualize data in an aesthetic and functional way
This is an introductory course, and is not designed for students who already have bioinformatics and coding experience.
We especially encourage applications from students who are members of populations that are historically underrepresented in bioinformatics and genomics: African American, Native Pacific Islander, Native American/Alaskan, Latinx, as well as students with disabilities, those from low income households, and first generation to college.
Prerequisites:
Coding experience is NOT required.
All applicants should have interest in pursuing a STEM major, especially in the fields of biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics/genomics, or related areas.
Requirements:
Only open to incoming frosh or transfer students.
Must commit to attending all class meetings and completing assignments.
Instruction is synchronous, so you must be able to attend all meetings.
Class size will be limited to 15 participants.
