Curriculum: Introduction to Theatre & Stage Basics

San Diego Junior Theatre's in-school outreach programs are a great introduction to the basics of live theatre. Students will learn theatre terminology, stage directions, how to work with a script, and other skills that highlight creativity and collaboration. Students will hone these skills while putting together short scenes which will be performed for friends and family on the final day of class.

Program Methodology

San Diego Junior Theatre’s Education Outreach program travels to schools and community sites offering theatre enrichments. We offer programs to all grade levels (K through 12) for students ages 5-18. Our education programs are customized for individual schools, depending on the goals of the teachers, administrators, and/or PTA/PTO organization requesting the program. After-school programs typically combine theatre principles (voice, body, face, gesture, imagination, focus) and life skills (empathy, communication, friendship, inclusion, problem solving). Students gain experience rehearsing and performing theatrical content. Sessions utilize project-based learning by building toward a final presentation of short scenes or excerpts that may be performed for school students and staff as well as an invited audience of families and friends.

Site Requirements

While Junior Theatre is flexible in terms of space provided for this program, the ideal space would be a large classroom, gym, cafeteria, or similar. Having open space for students to move around and express themselves freely is our main requirement.

Program Costs Per Group

1 hour x 10 sessions x 1 instructor x $150/hr = $1500

1.5 hours x 10 sessions x 1 instructor x $150/hr = $2250

*Please note that Title I schools may be eligible to receive outreach programming at a discounted rate.*
