INTRODUCTION: Welcome to Palm Sunday!! Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent and marks the beginning of Holy Week. During Holy Week we follow the last days of Jesus' life on earth. On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus coming to Jerusalem, where crowds welcomed him. On Holy Thursday, we remember Jesus' Last Supper with his Apostles. On Good Friday, we remember his Death on the Cross. On Holy Saturday, we remember his body in the tomb and we celebrate the joy of his Resurrection on Easter. The lessons this week will be different than previous lessons as we will have three Gospel readings. Palm Sunday is actually the only Sunday on which we hear two Gospels read at Mass. Our lessons this week will cover the first Gospel reading and then break down the second Gospel reading into two parts. Each of these Gospel readings will be their own lesson this week. So let's get started.
JESUS COMES TO JERUSALEM: The last week of Lent is the holiest time of the year for Christians, when we remember the events of Jesus' suffering and death. If there's ever a time to do some extra praying, fasting and almsgiving, it's now. It's also a great time to go to church. The Sunday before Holy Week, which is this Sunday, is Palm or Passion Sunday, when we remember Jesus' final entry into Jerusalem. In the Gospel reading, we will see that the people of Jerusalem were excited about Jesus' arrival.  So let's go to page 1 of your Good News Gospel Weekly and read "Jesus Comes to Jerusalem" and then answer the questions below.

SUMMARY:  Great job! In the Gospel reading, we see Jesus enter Jerusalem for the last time. He rode a humble donkey (colt) into the city. The people put their coats on the road to carpet the path and waved palms in greeting. They were excited to see him and shouted, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" (Matthew 21:9; Luke 19:38). We repeat these words at Mass when we say the Eucharistic prayer.  Palm branches are widely recognized as symbols of peace and victory, which is why they are used on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, as it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. During Palm Sunday, Mass will begin with the Procession of Palms. Everyone will receive a palm. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. This week you will also have a chance, at the end of this lesson, to create your own palm branch and begin your own Holy Week journey. A journey that will allow you to walk with Jesus to the cross, to the tomb and on to victorious life!
HOLY WEEK ACTIVITY: In your Unit 4 Activity Bag, you will have received the following items, which are also pictured below: a Palm Branch craft, an "Our Easter Surprise" booklet, and a "My Holy Week Journey" pop-up calendar. We will be putting together the palm craft in this lesson, using the instructions below, and we will be using the "Our Easter Surprise" booklet and the "My Holy Week Journey" calendar throughout the week to follow along with Jesus on his Holy Week journey. Listed below is the "My Holy Week Journey Schedule" which outlines what windows to open on your calendar and pages to read in your booklet for each day of Holy Week. I have also created a link to the schedule in your lesson if you would like to print it out to have on hand throughout the week.
MY PALM BRANCH ACTIVITY: Now it is time for you to put together your own palm branch to remind you of Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem. Follow the instructions below to put together your palm and be ready to greet Jesus on Palm Sunday!
