Phonetics/Phonology Unconference on Pedagogy (Phon-UP)

  • When? Monday 10 June 2024, 10- 4 pm
  • Where?  University of York (room tbc, face-to-face only)
  • (Dis)Organisers: Marina Cantarutti (University of York),  Sam Hellmuth (University of York), Rebekka Puderbaugh (University of Edinburgh), Rory Turnbull (Newcastle University)

Now in its second year after last year’s meeting in Newcastle, Phon-UP is a radical space for investigating innovative and effective methods and approaches to teaching phonetics and phonology.

While our primary disciplinary focus is phonetics and phonology, we welcome participants from all areas of linguistics and the speech sciences.

What is an unconference?

A conference typically has a hierarchy, a strict structure, and a set agenda. An unconference is instead led by the participants. While the organisers have some particular topics and questions to serve as a springboard for discussion, the direction and the agenda (such that it exists) for the day will be determined by the participants.

Programme

As an unconference, there is no formal programme, and the organisers have set some topics to be considered by participants. Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and topics for exploration too

Do I need to make a presentation?

No, just show up with yourself and your bright ideas (and any props or objects you wish to demonstrate!), but please register below as spaces are limited.
