A Four-Day Course organized by the Imperial Institute of Ceramic Science and Technology, Vadodara.(iicst.org)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is an intensive combination of classroom lectures and exercises that address most of the significant topics in the field of glass manufacturing including refractories and furnace operations. The individual sessions are titled in the accompanying outline of the daily topics. These lectures follow the natural evolution of refractories from their mineral and synthetic origins to their chemical, mineralogical, and microstructural constitutions, and their application, installation, and degradation in service.  The lecture on glass follows the raw materials for glass, types of glasses, glass formulations, melting of glass, glass melting furnaces intermittent and continuous glass furnaces, properties of glass, and glass testing. The afternoon sessions are designed to give the participants experience with common refractory tests.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS COURSE?

Engineers, managers, contractors, purchasing agents, furnace operators, maintenance supervisors, and technicians who are involved in the manufacturing, marketing, research, development, or consumption of glass materials will find this course beneficial. Refractory installers and maintenance personnel may also benefit from better installation and maintenance techniques.  People working in glass industries and not have professional qualifications in glass technology or ceramic technology. A high-level technical or engineering background is not essential to take this course, although technical professionals will find the subject matter informative and useful.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this course are to introduce the participants to the ceramic engineering fundamentals of all of the classes of refractories and types of glasses, their constitution, their application, and some of their degradation and failure processes. The laboratory sessions are designed to provide the participants with direct experience in fabricating test specimens and the application of standard test methods.

INSTRUCTORS:

Dr. S R Kumar is the Technical Director of the IICST, Vadodara. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Ceramic Engineering and M.S. and B.Tech. degrees in Ceramic Technology. He has industrial experience in Glass and Refractories manufacturing. Had led the research laboratories of renowned Glass & Refractory manufacturing and contributed a lot. Prior to joining IICST in 2018, he taught refractories as a visiting professor in the Ceramic Engineering Department of various universities. Dr. Kumar is active in the glass, refractories, and advanced ceramic committees.
