HSABC Work Study Form
HSABC WORK-STUDY INFORMATION

Every work-study contract at Humanities Spring is worked out on an individual basis.
Students might do anything from washing windows to organizing our library loft or from student-teaching to helping our Italian cook make Italian cakes for evening serate. We think work is a learning experience, and every student at Humanities Spring has a half-hour daily chore, whether or not he or she is part of the work-study program. We try to create work-study schedules which are fruitful for the work-study student, as well as the HSIA community at large. Occasionally, we award small scholarships to supplement work-study.

The Finances

High school students may apply for up to 500 dollars of work-study. College students may apply for a partial or full work-study scholarship. Full work-study schedules require energy and determination. Several students have been at HS on full work-study scholarships; they have found their summers tiring, at times, as well as fruitful and stimulating. We calculate student work at about 8 dollars an hour – but we are not rigid about this If you are applying, for example, for five hundred dollars in work-study, you will do anywhere between 45 and 65 hours of work-study... We will work out your schedule with you so that it seems fair and productive to everyone. We want the work to be a part of the experience that you learn from and enjoy.

The Dates

Work-study students often do the bulk of their work in the weeks before the program begins or the week after it ends to leave them freer when they are actively engaged in the learning (and travel!) that is HSABC. But don't worry, if you can only come for the duration of the program, we will do our best to make this work out – but we may well not be able to award you more than 300 USD in work-study.

The Work

Most of the work-study help we need is in kitchen duty, housework, driving (college students) and maintenance. There is some student-teaching and gardening available for students with experience, and occasional tutoring or homework help for our Italian students.
Kitchen duty: helping our Italian cook, washing dishes, making cookies or cakes, sandwich duty before our day-trips, dinner duty.
Housework: laundry with the HSIA machine, sweeping, etc. -- whatever housekeeper needs on a given day. Driving: you must have an international driver's license (easy to get in the USA with a regular American license), know how to drive a stick shift, and be confident on country roads.
Maintenance: varies most each year. Could be: washing windows, doing heavy work in HSIA garden, sewing curtains, making book-ends, etcetera.
Student-teaching: varies, could be helping to correct Italian 1 homework papers, tutoring Italian students in English, or giving a class or mini-course on a HSABC related topic (you may propose these and we will review and give you our feedback.
