Event Details: Join us for an evening of sharing thoughts and inspirations for all forms of justice with spoken word art forms and music as we kick off the first event in our Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA)/Hopkinton Freedom Team (HFT) series of collaborations during National Poetry Month! This event will be an open mic open for all students, teens, and adults to join with Mr. Jamele Adams starting and ending the evening as our featured guest poet. We aim to build community amongst all types of performers from different walks of life and promote healing for a better and more just world through conducting this event. Please consider participating by reading an original poem or someone else’s poem or performing a piece of original music or someone else’s piece that inspires you about justice (i.e., social, environmental, cultural, etc.). All forms of creativity and imagination are welcomed and encouraged.

We will select performers solely based on the order we receive completed registration forms (i.e., on a first-come, first-serve basis). Each performance will receive a maximum of 4 minutes of allotted performance time, which includes time for setting up and cleaning up. We highly recommend practicing beforehand to tailor your performance time within 4 minutes. There will be a sign held up near the front of the stage to alert performers when there is 1 minute left of performance time, after which we will have to ask the performers to end the performance.

In the event we find that we have more reservations than we have slots available, we will keep a waitlist going for future events and will contact potential participants (on a first-come, first-serve basis) as slots open. There will also be an intermission break for 10 minutes--chips and water bottles will be served--during the event. If you need to leave at any point before the end of the event, please quietly gather your belongings and do so.

Please click here if you would like to watch a short Tedx Talk featuring our guest poet, Mr. Jamele Adams.

Event Timing: Friday, April 26th, 2024 from 7:00pm-9:00pm
Event Address: The HCA Upper Loft, 98 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton, MA, 01748

Please arrive 15-20 minutes before the event start time if you would like to meet and mingle with the other performers and/or need time to practice or set up your instrument, etc. The HCA Loft has an excellent sound and A/V system and has a piano for performers to use as well. Please contact HCA's Ethan Moncur (ethan@hopartscenter.org) to discuss what you will need in terms of set-up and equipment at the HCA and/or if you have any questions or special requests. We will also do our best in concert with the HCA to resolve any technical issues or glitches that may arise during the event as quickly as possible.

Please contact Cathleen Dinsmore (cathleen@hopkintonfreedomteam.org) or Jhanvi Puri (jhanvipuri2@gmail.com) if you have any questions or concerns or need to cancel your reservation. Please notify Cathleen at least one week in advance of the event if you need to cancel so we can contact any waitlisted participants in a timely manner. Those participants who cancel at least one week in advance of the event will be put on the waitlist for future events. Thank you!

Mission of the HFT:

The mission of the Hopkinton Freedom Team is to create unity in the community by fostering inclusion, solidarity, and compassion for all people. The Freedom Team is focused on moving beyond tolerance to embracing, sharing, and celebrating our community’s diversity. Its members meet monthly to explore ways of offering dialogue, support, and programming to community members with a goal of promoting love, inclusion, and trust (“LIT”). Please refer to the HFT's website for further information and on how to get involved with the team.

The Freedom Team also offers a safe, confidential, and respectful space to discuss incidents involving harassment or discrimination related to race, color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, or class using a transformative justice model. The first Freedom Team formed in 2016 in Natick through the inspiration of Mr. Jamele Adams; the Hopkinton Freedom Team formed in 2020.
