Local Motion would like to hear which legislative priorities you think deserve our focus in 2024.

We provide a brief summary of each possible initiative, but please understand that some of these are challenging to explain in this format.

All of these priorities are important in different ways, but our staff and legislators have limited capacity, so we need to prioritize. Thanks for helping us do that!

Creating mechanisms to ensure that the State builds sidewalks and/or protected bike infrastructure along high-priority segments of state highways

Creating liability protections for rail and utility corridor owners to allow for more path development in these right-of-ways

Increasing funding for e-bike incentives

Requiring that the state evaluate and offset the impact of transportation projects that increase vehicle miles traveled

Update VT law to require that drivers yield to a person entering a crosswalk if the pedestrian signals intent by raising their hand

Adjust definitions in statute to ensure that people in non-motorized wheelchairs are extended the legal protections of pedestrians, such as within crosswalks

Eliminate or adjust statute that requires pedestrians to use sidewalks when provided

Eliminate or adjust jaywalking laws in general

Allowing people on bikes to treat stop signs as yield signs

Allowing people on bikes to treat red lights as stop signs

Allowing people on bikes to cross intersections at red lights when there is an active pedestrian signal in their direction of travel (after stopping and yielding to pedestrians)

Updating Vermont's Vulnerable User safe passing law to require a 4-foot passing distance (current statute only recommends 4 feet)

Increasing the amount of insurance that drivers are required to carry for bodily injury and/or property damage

Changing statute to allow for speed limits below 25 MPH in more areas (lower limits currently allowed only in designated downtowns)
