International Convocation of Unitarian Universalist Women (IWC) and Asylum Seekers Sponsorship Project (ASSP) are collaborating on a very special project that aims to support women and children recently released from detention facilities or recently arrived in the U.S. Families will receive wellness kits that include information on existing legal service providers, mental health resources, and activities that may help them to cope with and heal from trauma.

Asylum-Seekers Sponsorship Project (ASSP) is a grassroots organization made up of committed volunteers that have come together to transform the way people see their role in the United States immigration system and offer concrete actions people can take to demonstrate solidarity with immigrants. ASSP seeks to educate and activate sponsors and volunteers who can serve as a bridge between people seeking safety and their new communities and join the fight for our collective liberation.

Our hope is to extend the network of welcoming and supportive communities for asylum seekers. Although Asylum is an international human right, the US Immigration system repeatedly violates international law and restricts people from seeking asylum or places undue hardships on asylum seekers--including incarceration.

The project’s approach is one of 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 and 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. We hope you join us!

𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: The following volunteer roles can be fulfilled either by an individual or group. 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. Commitment time varies between one to four hours a week. *

𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐲: We all seek connection when we arrive in a new place. In this role you will connect with a family or individual and function as a connection in this country. Allies will write letters, send cards, text or chat, or send small gifts. For example, you might send the kids a book every month.

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫: Conduct online research of the services requested by asylum seeking women in their cities. A common request is finding food resources. Food pantries and mutual aid networks are great avenues to explore for this request. Requests may include assistance in locating medical care, legal services, or other community resources. A researcher may work with ASSP’s social work intern to map resources found.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Translate resource documents to various languages to be included in the wellness kit and/or future communication with the recipients.

𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: These donations can be included in the wellness kits or mailed at a later date as well. All welcome kits will include medicinal herbs, know your rights booklets, gift cards, art kits and other items or information that fosters trauma healing and/or facilitates access to the asylum process. Additional items might include kid’s books, stuffed toys, bath bombs, snacks, etc.

𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫: Either fundraise for the project as a whole through the UUFP Challenge grant or fundraise for a particular family’s needs--including legal fees. Individual and family legal costs can range anywhere from $1,000.00 to $10,000.00.

𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭: Host an Art workshop, Healing Circle, Legal clinic or Welcome party in your congregation or organization. Provide a physical space and coordinate an arts workshop or a pro-se legal clinic. This is part of a dream of the project lasting past its initial phase which is sending the wellness packets. Creating a connection directly between asylum seekers and their families with a local congregation or individual that wants to welcome them to the community. We will provide virtual facilitators for Circles and Legal Clinics.

𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐭𝐬: We plan to mail kits to at least 30 families. We will send you the ingredients, mailing instructions, and postage. You can personalize the kits you mail.
