It sounded like violin music, and it was coming from the basement… *
The American woman was afraid because she was alone in the castle she had rented for the holidays, for this reason she didn't even consider going downstairs to see where the music came from. *
Still, after a while she couldn't stand hearing the noise, so she risked going to the basement. *
She started walking down the stairs and carried on walking when the music suddenly broke off playing. *
She stopped moving for a second, then continued making steps until she saw a white ghost of a woman standing with a violin in her hands. *
She was thinking about running, but she kept staring at the ghost. *
All of a sudden, the ghost turned around and said: 'I'm the owner of the castle. I enjoyed playing the violin when I was alive. I miss being alive.’ *
The ghost suggested playing music, but the woman preferred asking her questions about her life and death. *
The ghost talked a lot, she mentioned being a famous violin player and she admitted being lonely as a ghost. *
The woman asked how she had died, but the ghost avoided answering at first. *
Still the woman insisted: ‘Would you mind telling me what happened to you?’ *
So the ghost started crying and answered: 'When I was a young woman I loved playing the violin, I imagined becoming a famous violinist, which involved studying and practising a lot without thinking about anything else. *
However, my father, an important bank manager, insisted on me marrying a man I disliked. *
I couldn't imagine being married to him. *
This very mean man couldn't bear being refused, he hated not winning and he looked forward to getting me. *
In addition, I was in love with someone else. My lover recommended escaping, but I said ‘no’, unfortunately. *
One day, my husband-to-be saw us kissing and got very jealous. *
He started offending us and then ended up killing us. *
He denied having killed me and my love all his life long and never took on responsibility. *
The music you heard me playing is the one my secret love enjoyed listening to.’ *
When the woman asked where the secret lover's ghost went, she told her that he finished floating somewhere and that she never gave up finding him again. *
The woman said: ‘I could get round to coming and spending time with you sometimes.’ *
The ghost said: ‘How lovely, finally I have a friend. I miss meeting with people, I feel them loving each other, I can hear them whispering sweet words to one another. Now you can go, I won't bother you sleeping.’ *
So the American woman went back to bed and fell into a deep sleep. The next morning, she forgot seeing the ghost, she didn’t remember talking to her, but she had a melody of a violin in her mind playing all day long. *
