Dallas Youth Garden 2023 Season Intern Application
This year our applications will be taken on line. Applications will be accepted until April 7, 2023 4PM. The Dallas Youth Garden has ten  openings for students just completing the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. Applicants will receive a stipend of up to $750 and can receive school work study credit* to learn and apply skills to build and maintain a market garden using sustainable garden practices to provide fresh produce for the hungry in our community.

Experience/Training:  No training or experience is needed

Who Can Apply:  Any Dallas High School Student, Morrison, or Home School Student who lives in the Dallas School District  and is in 9th/10th/11th grade as of 4/3/2023.

Start/End Dates:  Start May 2nd - Ends September 9th

What you need
  • Transportation to the Dallas Youth Garden (Trinity Lutheran Church - 320 SE Fir Villa Rd).
  • Ability to work in the Garden on designated days.
  • Reasonably sturdy gardening clothes that can get dirty.
  • Ability to access the internet to research garden needs and maintain garden progress reports.
  • The ability to do garden tasks such as pick weeds, hoe, shovel and lift 25 lbs of weight in the hot sun.
Payment

Interns will receive a stiped of $750 for work completed during the active garden season (May 2nd-September 9th) and an additional four hours over the month of September.  

Tasks
  • Visit the Food Assistance Program to understand what food is needed and how it is distributed.
  • Work with supervisors and other students to develop a written plan for a 25’x50’ market garden.
  • Present and review market garden plans with advisers and other students.
  • Plant and maintain a weed free market garden during the summer months. (Plant by mid May).
  • Work 1+ hours Tuesdays and 1+ hours on Thursdays and 2+ hours Saturdays at the garden.  (Schedules will be adjusted during the school year to minimize impact on school activities.)
  • With Garden Supervisor, identify and address any issues that inhibit vegetable production.
  • With other members, pick and deliver harvest. (Harvest July Through September)
  • Prepare garden for winter. (Early September)
  • Maintain a weekly log with pictures of garden progress on the Dallas Youth Garden Web Page.
  • Participate with other interns in leadership activities.
  • Complete a communication, a garden production, and an education  project.
Schedule

Applications accepted:  until April 7h (4PM). Phone  Interviews to be conducted: April 13th - April 19th Intern selections made: April 19th . First day of work: Tuesday, May 2nd.

* - Students from Dallas High School will receive work study credit.  Staff will assist students from other education institutions to obtain work study credit as requested.
