Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Professional Birth Assistant Program?
A: It's a 60-hour online training program that prepares midwifery students and those interested in community birth assisting. It covers assisting primary care providers at home and birth center births, including routine and complication care management, vitals, IVs, pharmacology, A&P, and more. The program is entirely online, self-paced, and accessible for a full year. Scholarship recipients receive the online education program for one year for no cost. Each recipient understands that PBI will not be organizing preceptorships or skills sign offs for experience or certifications. This is the awarding of the online program education only.
Q: Are Birth Assistants certified?
A: Yes, we award the credential of Certified Professional Birth Assistant to students who complete the online program, obtain NRP and BLS certifications, pass a skills check, and participate in at least five labor experiences as student assistants. While not mandatory nationwide, our certification sets a high industry standard for community birth.
Q: Who is eligible for a scholarship?
A: Anyone can apply, regardless of financial need. However, preference is given to students from rural and underserved areas, those in communities with midwives, Indigenous students, students of the global majority, and previous applicants who didn't receive a scholarship.
