Studio Lab Application for Mentors (apply ASAP for the 2024-2025 AY)
Apply today! This is an exciting opportunity to work with amazing undergraduate students at CU at no cost to you. All faculty in any unit of the College of Arts & Science are eligible to apply.

Advancing DEI at CU: The Studio Lab for Undergraduates was officially launched in 2020 to provide an inclusive "learning by doing" experience for students interested in working with CU faculty. Studio Lab prioritizes advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek to admit diverse groups of students, mentors, and projects.  We work to foster an inclusive and anti-racist climate in our lab and at CU.  We are eager to include a wide range of topics and approaches including, but not limited to, those that focus on an aspect of diversity, equity, or inclusion.

How it works: We admit undergraduate students who are matched with faculty projects and paid (by Studio Lab) to work on these projects for about 5 hours a week. Studio Lab organizes social events and educational events. Events have included workshops on writing, publishing, civic engagement, and presentations by our faculty mentors about their projects. We also hold a big end of year poster session extravaganza at which students present. When possible, we try to assign 2 or more students to a project to foster teamwork and community building, but there is no requirement that you work with more than 1 student. We expect most faculty mentors and students to be with Studio Lab for the full academic year although this is not a requirement.

Who is eligible to apply:  Mentors can be tenure-track faculty, teaching faculty, instructors in the College of Arts & Sciences, and researchers at the Institute of Behavioral Science. Ph.D. candidates (meaning those at the dissertation stage) should be nominated by their advisor using this form.
Our projects will come from across the College of Arts & Sciences. If you can think of a productive and educational way to collaborate with an undergraduate student, Studio Lab would love to get your proposal. All undergraduate students at CU Boulder are welcome to apply (using a separate application) regardless of their major. Please encourage your students to apply!

Nominating Ph.D. candidate to be mentors: Are you working with a Ph.D candidate who has reached the dissertation stage and would be a good candidate to serve as a mentor in Studio Lab? If so, there is a question on the application below where you can nominate them. Dr. Sarah Wilson Sokhey will reach out to Ph.D. candidates who are nominated. We allow a limited number of Ph.D. candidates to serve as mentors.

Examples of work that Studio Lab students can do include (but are not limited to):
* Code reports, videos, etc. to create quantitative datasets
* Help with community outreach projects
* Assist with creative projects: film something, design choreography, organize creative materials, catalogue materials or tools, organize and promote performances and art exhibitions, and much more
* Prepare case studies
* Collect news articles
* Translate materials
* Write a literature review
* Prepare a bibliography
* Collect research materials
* Conduct survey analysis
* Conduct statistical analysis
* And much more! We encourage faculty to think outside the box when thinking about what students could work on with them.

Questions? Email Dr. Sarah Wilson Sokhey (sarah.sokhey@colorado.edu). I would be happy to meet with you individually to discuss how your project could be included in Studio Lab.
